Please help me find the rhythm!
This is very embarrassing, very basic and it never happend before : I simply can't find out what the rhythm is on my new project. In other words: I can't find the right settings that will make features like quantizing and the Step Sequencer act the way I want them to. I tried with 1/16, 1/16 triplets as well as 1/32/triplets with no luck. I'd be very thankful if someone would be so kind and listen to a 4 second drum-clip I uploaded on Soundcloud and tell me, what the settings should be for quantize and the SS. The link : http://soundcloud.com/erik-oberg/basicdrums-drums Thanks a million in advance and best regards from...

Well that's a "shuffle". So you can either quantize to eighths and keep increasing your strength until you get what your after...probably around 63-65 perhaps. Or...look in your groove templates and find an appropriate 8th shuffle feel. PS: My menu nomenclature might be a bit off as I'm not at my DAW now. But I'm sure someone else will chime in presently also.

Sounds like a basic shuffle to me ... swung eighths. So you would need to quantize to 1/8 triplets.

Yup...8th triplets will do it. But it will lose a tad of true laid back shuffle feel if he just hard quantizes to 8th triplets. Might get a little mechanical. Give both a try there Erik and see which works best for you.

I would call that 12/8 Set the time sig to 12/8 make sure the SS shows 12 steps per pattern/bar. Snare goes on 4 and 10 HH on 1,3,6,7,9,12 Kick on 1,7 Then you can use standard 1/4 1/8 or 1/16 quantise without worrying about tuplets.

Yeah, if you want a laid-back feel, using triplets might be too rigid. Actually I see there's a "Swing" control in the Quantize dialog, so you might be better off quantizing to 8th and playing with the Swing and Strength. And I guess that would avoid moving any notes that are too far off into the middle position of the triplet.

Great! Thanks a lot both of you :-) Would you know which Beats and Steps settings to use in the SS ? The basic rhythm is fine with 8/8, but when I make rolls, I can't make them fit.

I always use 1/8 triplets for swing but using straight 1/8s and adjusting the swing in the quantizing window might make your score easier to read if you don't swing all the way to triplets. Sonar does not display swing in a friendly manner, and, honestly, most printed sheet music just uses 1/8s and with a note at the top to indicate swing. I write swing as 12/8 instead of 4/4 but most musicians hate that. By the way, no need to be embarrassed at all. I have known seasoned producers with gold records who were confused by this. They knew the feel they wanted but did not know how to express it in music theory terms.
