As a guitar player, I've suffered serious GAS for years. Finally got to a point that I just didn't need/want much beyond the collection I built.

    then I discovered plugins...

Ha Ha!  My no VST buying withdrawal program messed up in December when I had to have Notion 4.  The sale killed me ($49.00).  I am feeling like the old joke where the wife brings home two pairs of new shoes she bought because 1 pair was half off so she "thinks" she bought the bundle for 1/2 of what she paid.  :P

I guess technically Mike is right, software isn't gear.  The affliction that many of you suffer from is certainly related, but there is no gear involved. I believe that somehow the GAS virus has mutated and what many of you have is VGAS.
    Virtual gear acquisition syndrome.

The problem is that a lot of software is relitively cheap compared to hardware.  I just got sick of keeping up w/ software and realizied most of it sat unused as I turned to old standards.  I've got a lot of the Prochannel stuff which I use and keeps the addiction sane.

very little HD space for all the "gear", err software I have bought......

    sooo......let's get some REAL equipment....

Now I have no space in my apt.

Bought a Yamaha Motif 6 this weekend, the price was a steal at the local used place, I just had to have it. but, I have no space for it...time for a 2 tier stand!!!  Then my guitar center ups boxes start showing up, cause used gear is cheaper.  ugh. so.....much....bubblewrap.

okay now I need a house, yeah that's it!  a house, then I can setup my studio the way I want....then....oh dear.....I'm doomed.

We'd have a cure for GAS if only someone would produce that ONE MAGICAL PLUGIN that makes everything sound great.  Then we'd never have to buy more.

I personally have no plugin addiction -- I can stop buying them anytime I want.  I stopped at least ten times over the past month.

Can't control the GAS? Call a physician! :P

I loath technology in the sense that it can take control of lives and warp ones mind, rather than one having the will and experience to control it --- it's what one can do creatively and with the tools they already have. I prefer to simplify my life, I will NOT be assimilated. .  .  {resistance is futile} .  .  aww shut up!!! :P

The problem isn't the lack of self discipline that leads to software buying sprees. That's just a symptom, and you will never succeed in solving problems by attacking symptoms.

The root issue is that you lack the funding to exercise your addiction to its fullest potential.

You need to get out there and make some money so you can buy some more plugins.

    So true.
This all started with the Creative Keytar included with a Soundblaster Live!5.1. I had gotten my daughter a Radio Shack keyboard that had a MIDI output. What is that, we wondered. So we tracked down a MIDI /joystick cable.
Hooked it up and..Oh, how cool is that!. But wait. There's surely more to this. So, down to the music store, and back home with a shiny new box of Sonar Home Studio 4. OMG. I'll never forget the first time I saw that screen open up on my monitor.
It's all second nature now. I have a room full of equipment, VST's I don't even remember, and friends all over the world.
And I still check the Software forum to see what's new.
    Larry, you're a bad influence.

If you observe closely the structure and semantics of my post, you might discover a thing.

    Perhaps a couple of them.

    Perhaps none.

    :-)

    I'm sorry, it's unfortunate that you misunderstood;

I was simply expressing 'my own opinion' and clearly stated; not directed at you or anyone one else here.  My contribution is also an 'addition to the topic' based on actual facts along with good advise. Hey I don't expect everybody to have the same discipline and control of G.A.S. ;-)

That said: Just because others disagree with you or prefer to avoid your comments completely; does not mean you can risk violating the TOS by posting snide remarks. I hope you understand, keep the peace and move on. Thanks. :-)
