Please stop replying to the Spam.

Just report it as "Spam - Urgent" and then move on.

If you post a reply in their threads, it not only shoots it straight back to the top of the forum, but it notifies the scum that posted it that it's attracted some attention. They're not worried in the least about you telling them that you've reported them, it's more a case of "any publicity is good publicity".

I agree, but spam posts will continue until a process is in place to dump them quickly.

Spammers know their posts will remain for days, so there's no incentive to not keep polluting the forum(s).
Currently, spam posts remain long after they are reported.

    Sux, though.
Of the handful of forums I frequent, this is the only one that has this problem.

This is the exact thing to do. I never (well you know) respond to spam I just report it when the option is available. And I try really hard to not get into the GP type threads. Any response is the wrong thing to do (IMO) it merely lengthens the misery.

Agreed. As a Mod elsewhere, the instruction is always report and avoid commenting further. It sinks faster that way if the mods do take a little time to get to it.

It might no be a bad idea to have a new forum for promotional announcments from third party VST and sample providers, posts happen in the software forum and are tolerated, but do annoy some users.  Fake driving licence providers, kitchen salesmen and video converter software hawkers need not apply.

Of course, letting a forum member change or delete or do anything w/ the content of the posts means Cakewalk by Roland is responsible for their work on the forums.  Opens up all kinds of liabilities.  It is a legal no-no - I believe that is a technical term in law.

It is one of those things that sounds simple that our legal system makes ... complicated.

Hardly. Its a forum AT with very little liability to CW or the membership. I don't think anyone has been sued because a post was moved or deleted on any forum. First where would one file?  In CW's case it would need to be in Boston Mass. Then what would be the alleged damage? If a lawyer filed its very possible he could be subject to disbarment for filing a frivolous law suite. This country is litigious but there are real limits.

Keep in mind AT that everything posted on this forum belongs to CW. It becomes their property. They can do what ever they want with it.  You, me have no copy write on what we post.

    John,

true that, but you hit the nail on the head.  "..very little liablity."  If it was me I wouldn't take a chance.  Anybody can sue anybody over anything.  What is easier, ignoring the whining on a forum or taking a chance, however small, of spending money to have to protect yourself against frivolous lawsuits?  I know of condos etc. that won't accept lawyers (not a written rule, but still whishpered) since it costs a lawyer 5 minutes and a piece of paper to dispute fees etc. that the owner's association has to pay a lawyer to answer.  It is easier to weed as much of that out before it happens.  Same thing w/ a public forum.  Why give any control to a third party that could possibly/might be a problem?
One thing I've learned is if it your money, you don't jack around.   Would anyone sign a contract that stated they were financially responsible for any fees/costs incurred by Cakewalk by Roland for their forum so they could mod it for free?
The mods ought to do a better job and it is best to squash spam quickly so you don't keep getting it.  But us forum users can't seem to do our part either, since people look/respond to spam, generating hits.  Which is what the spammers want.

One forum I belonged to back when had a way that you could not start a new thread until you posted 10 times and were given the once over by the Moderator. But I guess this forum software is the problem.
Lots of forums use trusted members as Moderators. Heck, it's free, they don't have to pay them

( PS I cannot post from my Android )

I noticed a spam showed in the old forum this morning and was gone within an hour,,, so the Moderators must be here somewhere... The  spam usually stays around for a few days.

AT, It's pretty sad really that in this day and age this has to even be taken into consideration.

But I can't really see any problem - the Forum Terms Of Service Agreement clearly states that:
    • By registering with the Cakewalk Forum, users agree that any post the moderators consider inappropriate may be removed at the moderator's sole discretion. Use of the Cakewalk Forums is a privilege, not a right. Cakewalk also has the right, at its sole discretion, to revoke board privileges at any time without notice.
It doesn't stipulate anywhere that any such "moderator" is, or has to be, a Cakewalk employee, only that:
    • Cakewalk is not responsible for messages posted on the Cakewalk Forums or the content therein. Unless expressly stated otherwise, this includes messages posted by Cakewalk personnel, agents, representatives et al.
All they'd need to do is maybe just add a small amendment to extend this, stipulating that this also refers to posts being moved or deleted by said "personnel, agents, representatives et al" and they'd have it covered.

Incidentally, I'd be all for appointing a few trustworthy forum users to receive any threads and/or posts reported as Spam.

Obviously, for other less cut and dried matters that get reported, this would still be dealt with by a Cakewalk employee.

To cover most times of a 24 hour period, you could have a user mod each from the US, Europe, the Far East and Australasia. Whoever gets the report first, deletes it. Simples!

To further cover all eventualities, maybe threads and posts deleted (from the public part of the forum) by such a user mod could be sent to an area only accessible by Cakewalk personal. If any appeal is forthcoming from the alleged spammer, they would have the ultimate decision to restore the thread or remove it forever.

This 'holding area' would also allow Cake to browse the identities of the spammer, should they wish to escalate the matter and block their IP address.

I can't see any problem at all with that.

My only provisos would be that such a user mod remain anonymous, and no potential user mod that actually volunteers to do this should get the job!

John, I know.  I used to bill for a NYC law firm, as well as copy legal forms out of one of the form books you had to buy.  Once you had used all the forms you were supposed to buy another.  Both jobs maybe put me on the hook, legal-wise.  And I couldn't have afforded the firm to defend me. ;-)
