Plug-in Edirol VSC (old) -> Sonar Home (TTS-1?)
Hello, I have been using SONAR LE for many years on an old computer with Windows XP. I am not an experienced user, but I wrote a lot of songs with midi and audio tracks, saved as Cakewalk Projects (*.CWP). Now I am opening the old CWP-files with Sonar Home Studio on a computer with Windows 10. After opening the project, it says "Missing Plug-ins: EDIROL VSC (Synth Rack)". This was the plug-in I used in the old Sonar LE. I can open the file with audio and midi tracks, but of course no instruments are playing, because Sonar doesn't recognise the old EDIROL VSC as an output. I can try to change each track separately to a new plug-in like TTS-1, but then I have to find a new instrument for each track separately. There are a LOT of files with a LOT of tracks... Is there a way to get the old VSC working? Or maybe substitute the plug-in for a newer one, leaving the instruments as they were set? Another question. To my disappointment I read that Cakewalk will stop product development, support and sales. I was actually just planning to buy a newer version of Cakewalk to continue composing on the new computer with Windows 10. Would this be possible and wise to do? Thanks.

I make a lot of backing tracks using Sonar and I also have some real old files. I always upgrade the sounds of my tracks as better sounds become available to me. If I was you I would take the time to just replace those old sounds with something 100% better. TTS-1 is based on the old Roland GM sound and replaced the VSC I think in Sonar 4. The sound should come out close as the VSC was GM. The TTS-1 is a basic player to see what's there. But try the Studio Instruments, and if you scored that free copy of HS you will also have Rapture. Sure it's a lot of extra work but time well spent because your tracks will come to life.

We are talking very old DXI so you basically have to install Sonar 3 to get it. That ain't going to happen on W 10. TTS-1 should play the files. I dug around a bit and seems it's long gone down the road.

I was thinking of the VST version - forgot it also came as a DX (or once came with Sonar), but yes, it has been discontinued for quite some time. >That ain't going to happen on W 10. Maybe if he's running a 32 bit OS. If you upgrade from a 32 version of Win 7 or 8 you get a 32bit version of Windows 10. If you have a 32bit OS and the old Sonar install set you can just install the plugin by going into the Advanced or Custom install option (forget exactly what it's called) and skip installing anything else.

@TheSteven and @Cactus, thanks for your help! I managed to install the old Sonar LE on my Windows 10 64 bit. Next, like @TheSteven said, I installed the VSC under a different configuraton as 32 bits, that worked! Now the old Sonar LE with the VSC works on the Windows 10 64 bit, so I can play all my songs and continue as I did. This is with the old version however, but it works for me. Now I have also downloaded the trial version of Home Studio. I would prefer using this newer version as I like TTS-1 more. My intention was to use the old VSC plugin for playing the old songs, and using the TTS-1 for recording new songs. For this, I see 3 options: 1. Using the old Sonar LE, playing the old songs with VSC, but using TTS-1 for recording new songs. This doesn't work. Sonar LE recognises the TTS-1, but when I select it, it says "Failed to insert DXi. The DXi may not be properly installed." So this option doesn't work, unless I manage to install TTS-1 for SONAR LE properly. I wouldn't know how. 2. Buying Sonar Home Studio, playing the old songs with VSC, but using TTS-1 for recording new songs. This doesn't seem to work. The old songs won't be played with VSC. I can find the Sound Canvas which I installed (32 bit) but it has a different name, so Sonar considers is at being a different plug-in. I.e. te output doesn't recognise the newly installed VSC as being the same as the VSC output in the CWP-file, they have different names. In all tracks, output is set at "EDIROL VSC 1", this was the name of the plug-in in the old Sonar LE program when recording. No sound. The "old VSC" is newly installed and can be found as a "new" plug-in under the name "SOUND Canvas VA 1".... So both "EDIROL VSC 1" and "SOUND Canvas VA 1" are mentioned as separate outputs, but when I choose "EDIROL VSC 1" there is nothing, and when I choose "SOUND Canvas VA 1" I get a sound, but I have to choose all the instruments for each track new. That makes no sense, then I could rather use TTS-1. So question is: is there a way to substitute the "EDIROL VSC 1" in the output by the new "SOUND Canvas VA 1", i.e. telling the program to use Sound Canvas plug-in instead of Edirol VSC 1, with same instruments selection? 3. Third option is to use only the old Sonar LE. This would work, but I cannot use TTS-1 or any facilities of Home Studio. That would be a shame. 4. Fourth option would be to use Sonar LE for the old songs, and Sonar Home Studio for the new recordings. But then, if I would work or improve the old songs, I can only do this with VSC. Option 3 would be the easiest solution, but if you have any idea to solve the other problems, I would like to change to Sonar Home Studio or Artist. At least, if they are still available....?? Can I still buy/download these products from Cakewalk? I apologise if the explanation above is too messy or complicated, I hope you understand what I mean. Thanks again, you are very helpful.

Unfortunately not, the Cakewalk Store is closed. It will go through the motions of giving you a price and a 'buy now' button, then you'll be taken to this page; http://www.cakewalk.com/announcement

Yes Home studio is free ( at least it was) via a give away by a software magazine. When you mentioned it in your first post I just assumed you already had HS. There have been a few glitches with TTS-1 on W10. A few people have reported having it not install and the only solution is re- installing Sonar. Grab the free version and re do your install using the Command center. The big bonus is getting Rapture which I think was $100 normally.

Thanks again. I had already downloaded the HS for 30 days trial, but that's a Demo Version that doesn't save/export. Now I tried the code, I got the Big Fish and Rapture, but it didn't replace the demo version of Home Studio. But I read in one of your earlier posts (@Cactus) that you had the same problem (you already had Home Stuydio) and therefore used another account. But I uninstalled the Home Studio, and then installed it again. Then the code worked. So now I have the free version (registrated) including Big Fish and Rapture. That should work for me for the next 10 years.... I am not a sophisticated Sonar user, so I still have some questions for you: 1. What is Big Fish (it was a massive download) and what does Rapture do? 2. Can I somehow substitute the drivers for Home Studio in a way that the "old" VSC (Sound Canvas) is replaced by the newly installed Sound Canvas (or something else) without having to change all the instruments individually? 3. I understand Cakewalk has stopped selling new products. Over here (Europe) I can still buy a copy of Sonar Platinum. It's quite a lot of money, but do you think it is worth it? Specifically because Cakewalk is not selling new products and I want to have something to work with for the next many years.... @Cactus, you use Sonar Platinum "until your dog dies" but apparently your dog has already outlived Cakewalk...! My dog has done the same, but what about me...? ;-) Thanks again!

For your information: thanks to your help I managed to install Sonar Home Studio (not the demo version) on my computer with Windows 10. I did the new installation NOT at 64 bits, but I could select the possibiltiy of installing at 32 bits. I also installed Big Fish and Rapture. Next, I installed the "old" VSC Sound Canvas" again (32 bits) and now Home Studio recognises it under the old name "Edirol VSC"! I also have Sonar LE installed, that works fine. So now, I have both Sonar LE AND Sonar Home Studio installed at Windows 10 32 bits. They both work with the "old" files!!! I am very happy. I can still play my old songs, and work on them, in both versions. As Home Studio now also works, I want to gradually move on to Home Studio, and use the newer possibilities. My problem with the old Sound Canvas has somehow solved (probably due to 32 bit installation , so I have only 2 questions left over for you: 1. Can you explain briefly the possibilities of Big Fish and Rapture? 2. Would upgrading to Sonar Platinum be worth the money? Thanks again, I have learned a lot from this forum :-)

1- Big Fish is Loops, I don't use loops, I'm a musician and I make my own songs or use downloaded midi files which I edit to my taste. Loops are for people who are not musicians so they can build a song piece by piece. I think it's what is used in electronic and Hip hop. So if you are a traditional player you probably will never use them. If any use there might be drum lops I guess, but in the time it would take to dig through all that stuff I can have 3 songs finished :) Rapture is a powerful player that uses Samples to play sounds and just about every instrument is in there. This is why I say you will want to replace the old sounds as those are synthetic low resolution sounds. Nobody wants to listen to those anymore. We now use Sample libraries as those are real instruments and most sound very good. 2-Not from the sounds of what you are doing. If your only working with MIDI HS has everything you need. The core program is the same in all versions. I would not send the $499 on Sonar as it's future is uncertain.

@Cactus/Johnny, thanks a lot! You have been very helpful! I am going to work with this. You are right, I don't use loops. I just record MIDI track by track, and then add the voices. Rapture I am going to try. I guess this is a plug-in that I can load? Thanks again.

Rapture is a Synth so you insert it from the list of instruments on the right in the browser. I haven't dug into too deep but it is full of high quality instruments. This was a $100 bonus as part of that deal. Home Studio didn't include much for synths compared to the full versions. So the free giveaway version was worth $150. Not bad.
