Plugins not showing up (SOLVED)

I must be doing something stupid.

I upgraded to Waves v9 with 64bit support for my GTR3.5 guitar amp sim - previous versions didn't work since I upgraded to Win 7 and Sonar x64 (even though other people have been able to).

GTR3.5 works fine in standalone mode now (yay!) and I rescanned VSTs in Sonar - GTR shows up as expected in the cakewalk plugin manager utility, but it does't show up in the list of available plugins when I'm trying to add an effect into a track's FX bin.

I've added GTR (repeatedly) to my plugin layout template and also tried using the default template which shows all plugins - to no avail.

Any thoughts?
Thanks
Russ

did you add the path for the 64bit dll of GTR in sonar before scanning?

Thanks - yes.. the path is included.

(If the path weren't included, Sonar wouldn't find it during the rescan & it wouldn't show up as 'found' in the plugin manager utility I believe...)

yes, but my point is about the 64bit one.  you might have only the path for the 32bit one in the scan path.

if you can see the 64bit version in the plugin manager (which I think from your post above you said you have added it to the menu), you can see the full path of that dll in the plugin manager - what is that path?

Did you create a custom menu for your plugins?
If you are looking in the browser into you custom menu you will not see the plugin listed.
You would need to update your menu in the plugin manager or look at the default menu for all plugins.

Thats if this is your case.

    Hope this helps.

Hi Beagle & TabSel - I'm not in front of my DAW (am in the office right now), but believe my path is:

c:\program files\cakewalk\vstplugins for the 64 bit path and
    c:\program files(x86)\cakewalk\vstplugins for the 32 bit path.

Wave - Yes, I have a custom menu for plugins - which I added GTR to, but GTR doesn't show up in the default layout either (which supposedly displays all plugins).  I don't typically use the browser to add FX, I typically just add the effect into the FX bin on the console view.

Ok this is the way its laid out in my system and it works.

    OS C:>Program Files>Native Insturment>Guitar Rig 4>Guitar Rig 4
                                                                   >Service Center>Service Center

The above would be your stand alone with the program Application file inside.
However if the programer (due to the license issues because of the service center is also there) programed the VST to point to the above file it would have to be exactly in the right folders and subfolder the programmer specified.  So make sure that it was loaded with it's defualts.  I not sure if this is the case but it could be.

    For the VST I have:

    OS C: > Program files > Cakewalk > Guitar Rig>64bit>Guitar Rig 4.dll

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,

Sorry I forgot to mention that Guitar Rig is a VST effect and not a synth (you probally already know this) I just wanted to make sure you are looking for it in the Audio FX menu and not the Synths menu.

Wave - thanks.. yes, I'm looking in both the VST effect and synth for completeness.

I would have thought the path settings were ok, given the effect is found when Sonar scans those paths for VSTs and it's listed correctly in the cakewalk plugin manager.    Additionally, all my other 32 and 64 bit effects are showing up properly, but I'll doublecheck the paths later this evening to be sure though.

Wave - if my paths were wrong, or if Sonar wasn't finding the GTR3.5.dll (or waveshell.dll) properly, GTR wouldn't show up in my list of available plugins in the cakwalk plugin utility, right?

I believe you are correct there.

if it's not showing up in your default menu (which I've seen this happen before), there are two things I know of that you can do:

    1) work around is to save it as a custom menu (make sure you name it and save it), then you have to select the named menu instead of default when you use the menus.

    2) uninstall and reinstall the plugin.  I've done that before with success for the exact problem you're having.

Beagle - thanks.  Yes, oddly enough, I created a custom plugin list, and added GTR - however it doesn't show up there either! I'll try reinstalling as per your recommendation to see if that helps.

I did the same thing with Kontakt (could this be an NI problem?).  the 32bit version would show up but not the 64bit version, even if I put it in a custom saved menu.  I had to reinstall to get it to show up.

Guitar Rig works fine for me - the issue I'm having is with Waves GTR3.5 - so not sure it's limited to NI.

You would think if it shows in the program manager that it would show up in Sonars menu list.
But we would be making an assumption.

My reason for stating this is because years ago I had a problem just as this with a older DX or maybe it was a VST I can't remember, but we are trying to get a solution to a problem that has no solution at this point.
    So now anything goes.

    Cheers,

Serious blonde moment on my part!!  Upon review, I found Waves GTR3.5 installed the x64 VST to a different path than my standard c:\program files\cakewalk\vstplugins, so once I modified the path in Sonar, rescanned and it's fine now.  D'OH!!

    Thanks for the help everyone.
