Police Radio effect? how do i do it?

hi, Im a novice here. I use cakewalk mostly for recording vocals over music that I already have made with other programs. I wanted to know how to go about making an effect that would make it seem like im talking over a police radio. You know like with all the static and noise such... "over, copy that, roger"...I use Cakewalk Sonar Producer 8.5. Any suggestions because I dont even know where to begin. Thanks

Look up in the Sonar X! forum for a thread I started asking about telephone effects... it was about 3 weeks ago.

There were numerous suggestions for either an EQ approach or a dedicated VST effect approach.

    Have fun!

    best regards,

Radio mics aren't full range, so reducing the bandwidth is the first thing.  High and Low pass filters until it sounds right.

Static, noise squeels - you'll have to find those online.  Use google.  Then just layer them underneath the vox.  Lots of fun.

Oh I also forgot to mention... try a Police Scanner for that authentic background clutter.

Add some distortion too for that out of range of the cell tower vibe!

I love these particular threads! Very helpful. I've been meaning to do this myself. You could also add a slight delay along with the distortion. I like the idea for background clutter as well. In '06 I had tix to see David Gilmour at Radio City Music Hall. I took along my MAudio Microtrack and when I got off the train I just walked around Penn Station and recorded the PA announcements for background FX...unfortunately I've since lost the file.

You could call 911 and tell them you have teenage girls and cocaine.  Keep your mic on and ready.

A more analog option is something like what Queen used on A Night at the Opera, which is to record the vocal, then send it out to a pair of headphones. Put the headphones in a fairly large tin can, and put a mic in the can to pick up the results and record it back in.

If you have a synth patch with white noise, a short burst of white noise at the end of each  transmission is fairly standard for police radio (i.e. squelch). I like the idea about the using headphones or similar bandwidth limited playback. One trick that works pretty well for extreme filtering (if you don't have an EQ with steep slopes) is to copy the vocal to a second track and send it to the same bus as the main vocal, at the same volume. Put the same EQ in both tracks and leave them both flat (sonitus will work fine for this). Reverse the phase of one of the copies. Now using and notch (peak) filter, modify only one of the two channels. The phase flip cancels everything but the difference in the EQs which gets an extreme effect.
