Police helicopter crashes into Glasgow pub
Unbelievable..120 people watching a band in The Clutha pub in Glasgow last night, 10:25pm, and a police helicopter crashes through the roof; http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-25165894

This is a setup for at least a dozen good joke lines, but the situation is a bit too serious for those. I will say that they are VERY fortunate that the crash didn't start a fire...

A tragedy. Looking at the scene, it's incredible that there's only one confirmed fatality as yet, even though that number is expected to rise.

Did anyone see the BBC reporter interviewing the son of the confirmed fatality? It's obvious to anyone that the poor guy is still in shock, yet they thought it appropriate to film him talking about the events of last night, and how he'd already identified his father while he was still inside the pub. Bad form that BBC, and totally insensitive.

Very sad indeed. I've been watching the reports here. Thankfully, they haven't shown the interview with the son.

That is horrible! Man...my feelings go out to all those involved. Steve...I've been in that spot with the media- they have one goal at any cost. How people may feel about anything is not one of their concerns. I can assure Steve, those actions aren't limited to the BBC reporters.

I didn't see that, thankfully. Still 1 confirmed fatality, but no-one's mentioned the 3 occupants of the 'copter. Can't imagine they survived.

The poor guy was obviously in shock mate, just sort of going through the motions. He looked to me like he was (understandably) completely sort of 'somewhere else', numb almost. He said he'd seen his father in the wreckage, and it seemed to me that he must have been in the pub, or close by, when it actually happened. He even said he "already knew" his dad might not have survived because the main impact was directly over his favourite 'spot' in the pub. But it sounds like he must have been ushered out before too long because he had to ring up the emergency hotline in an attempt to find out for certain if his father had died. They told him they didn't know but he could expect a call back tomorrow. It was at this point he had to tell the operator that he'd already seen his dad in the wreckage. I know they must get a lot of worried people ringing up but I got the feeling that this poor guy should have been under the care of someone at the scene, not having to ring up a bloody emergency line. And it seems like the BBC have been shadowing him all night and all morning with a view to being there when the bad news is confirmed. Awful.

It's had to work out what exactly happened from some of the reports. I read one witness account which said there was a bang and some dust, and the band joked that they were "bringing the house down," then seconds later there was a louder bang accompanied by huge clouds of dust and rubble. This would suggest to me that the helicopter made a hard landing which weakened the roof, before falling through it. From what I gather the rotors didn't lock, so they didn't free fall. It sounds like the pilot made a crash landing as best he could, but the roof couldn't hold them. From this, I wouldn't assume the occupants of the copter are dead - it could be that the fatalities were limited to whomever was sitting directly under the copter when it came through the ceiling. Although as per usual, I might be talking out of me arse. Edit: I was. 8 confirmed dead including the occupants of the chopper.

Hi, We can't say that the Helicopter was trying to smell all the dope in there so they could arrest someone, so it makes me wonder what a police helicopter was doing on top of a bar, unless they knew that some dope deals were done on top of the roof of the building? The "coincidences" are just too weird and off the wall! Either that or these guys were playing Chuck Yaeger? And they lost and didn't have their slide ruler with them! (If you never read that, you must ... fun book and lots of hilarious moments, but none more surreal than the slide rule moments!)
As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!

I'm guessing that the helicopter simply lost power and that the pub just happened to in between them and the ground.

It fell, out of the sky. craigb I'm guessing that the helicopter simply lost power and that the pub just happened to in between them and the ground.
Exactly Craig. The cause is unknown, but there is speculation that the pilot was trying to do a forced landing in a nearby patch of wasteland close to the pub. I was just talking to my friend in the police force who said that the rotors on those choppers are designed to keep working by inertia even if the engine cuts out, and yet witnesses say there was no sound of the rotors turning, the whole thing just came down like a stone.

Yes, that's called the autogyro effect. If that didn't happen, then probably something broke in transmission area and didn't allow the rotors to spin. You are very screwed at that point!
