Poll: Is DSF symphonic strings worth the uncertainty?
If I upgrade today, I get the strings. If I wait, I can get a better idea of what I am buying and possibly a discount at a later date, when the bugs are ironed out. So how do these strings sound?

If you don't have any expensive string library, then you should get this while it is free. It is the best strings sample for Dim Pro. It is worth 149USD retail, so can't compare that to Vienna or East West that cost 5 times more.

They're not THAT bad! Sure, they don't compare to any of the higher end libraries out there, but for use simply as a bed on a typical rock/pop song - nobody will be able to tell the difference once you've tweaked them a bit. I wouldn't use them for an orchestral type mockup - but that isn't their intended use.

I agree with Musichoo, The key here is if you don't have an extensive and expensive string library then you should get the strings deal. They sound better than anything inside Dimension by default. There is some debate over which library sounds better. I don't have an opinion because I don't own the East West or Vienna, When I upgraded to X2 I was working on a project that had two different string sections. I replaced those strings with the ones from Symphonic. It made a big difference as they sound a lot better than anything Dimension has by default.

I'm not sure how much cheaper they would make this until end of life. It's already pretty danged cheap. The strings are okay. They're a little TOO clean for my taste but they are certainly usable. I've said it before, they sound like the intro to Game of Thrones. I was hoping for more of a chamber music sound. Maybe with some tweaking I can achieve that.

I have them downloaded but have not installed them and probably never will. I pre-ordered X2 because I really liked what I saw in the webinar and I want X2 on my system as soon as possible. Will X2 be a show stopper? NO, I have a system image. Will it have bugs?, probably. Will they get fixed? mostly. Do I still want X2 on my system as soon as possible? Yes Do I want the strings and Dimension Pro on my system? Not really. So my personal opinion is I would not buy X2 now unless you want/need X2 now. YMMV... Kind regards, Rick

Are they substantially different or better than the SI-Strings that come with Producer? I don't use the SI-Strings because I have other things, but they are OK.

I'll be fired up in a little bit, konradh. Where would I find SI strings? Is that part of DimPro or something else? I'd imagine it's probably better though. There are a ton of variations and room/mic settings from onstage to back of the hall. It is quite powerful.

I purchased the Garritan Pocket Orchestra a couple of years ago when it was on sale through Cakewalk. Should I bother with DSF? I really can't afford to order today, however if DSF is better (I know this is subjective) than GPO - I may be able to get help. I would never do a full orchestra composition, but I enjoy having "realistic" sounding strings to lay underneath my more mainstream work. Thanks! Gavin

Beepster Where would I find SI strings? If you have X1 Producer then there are four SI virtual synths, each start the those letters. I've tried the bass guitar one and it's not too bad, if you pass it through guitar rig and stuff. I've not tried the other three.

The strings are... umm... OK, in a word. They are better than the demo makes them sound, but that's not saying much. There are a bunch of total throwaway filler patches with not particularly great or imaginative sounding effects put on them, which is about as useful as a chocolate teapot; I am personally quite able to apply a vanilla phaser to my string sound if I think it would sound good, and I suspect that I might not be alone. The straight up ensemble and section patches are decent, but as others have said nothing to make the Vienna folks tremble (heh, I'll be living in Vienna this winter for 5 months!). I haven't A/B'd them against the SI ones or, for that matter, the Vienna subset that comes with Kontakt, which is what I tend to use if I'm going for realism (if not, I'm as likely to use Mellotron or retro synth strings as anything else). My gut feeling is that the DSF ones are kind of somewhere in between the two. If you're really on the fence about whether to upgrade at all, I wouldn't let the bonus sway you unless you are really hard up for string sounds. However, if you feel like you'll probably upgrade at some point anyway (it's hard for me to see why anyone wouldn't unless you're changing platforms) I doubt the price will ever go down, and this is a little perk for getting in on the ground floor. There will probably be other special offers later, mind you - other freebies, whatever, but I personally can't see the price getting any lower. Then again, I've been wrong before!

Amazing how quickly we get spoiled. Some of the sounds we think of as throw-away now would have been life-changing for me not too long ago. I find myself nitpicking about quirks in Vienna or Hollywood Strings now, but there was a time when an ARP String Ensemble was my most prized possession. The SI-Strings in Producer are not the equal of the expensive and powerful sample libraries out there on the market and they don't give you as much control, but they are still quiet good—especially for a free plug-in.

Given what's already in SONAR, I personally like the bass and ep the best. The other two aren't bad, but as Konrad mentioned there isn't much flexibility in these synths.

OK I did a bit of A/B comparisons with a few of the other things mentioned (I don't have the full Vienna or any of the EWSL stuff, so can't comment on those) and here are my impressions: 1) DSF pretty much blows the SI strings out of the water. Not that they're useless, just... very limited. And not very 'deep' or realistic in terms of soundstage, etc. They sound pretty plastic-y in comparison to just about anything. YMMV, but that's what I'm hearing. 2) DSF is probably a bit better, and certainly a lot more flexible and varied, than the Garritan Pocket Orchestra that I think is included stock with Dimension. The Garritan ones are quite OK, but there's not a lot of variety. 3) DSF is not as flexible or complete in terms of articulation as the strings in Kontakt (which are a kind of basic Vienna subset, or so I am given to understand) but they're probably easier to use if you just want to throw up a quick big ensemble quickly or are looking for a big cinematic sound. 4) unfortunately, there are some pretty glaring tuning problems here and there in DSF, which makes some of what's there unusable (for me, at least). Again, a fair bit of it seems like filler to me to make it seem like a bigger library. I would be pretty peeved if I'd paid full price for it. 5) However, there are some really nice-sounding sections and ensembles in there (the small sections are a nice touch), and you could do a lot with it if that's all you had. So again, if you're short on string sounds this gets you a decent palette of usable stuff, along with some annoying filler that, who knows, other people might love, for a pretty good price (free). and that's my two euro-cents.

I thought maybe you were nit picking about this and was thinking "nah, it can't be THAT bad!", but I just listened to the wav files (no time to open up SONAR) and hmmm... One sample half way through dropped about 50 cents in tuning! And then quickly corrected! That sample is definitely un-usable. I got the impression they were on a VERY tight budget, maybe got budget musicians, and did one quick take for everything. Some of the staccatos even sounded like they were CLIPPING!! Whether any of this is a problem once loaded in DimPro and in a song, I don't know, but if the raw files have clear problems, any fixing is going to be a bit 'meh' and never 'WOW'. Still, I'm using SI Strings a bit here as a pad in many of my songs, and this should do a better job still so can't complain for free!

Being an early adopter does not require the pre-purchase (last day today). even more than that... if you want the strings, but don't want to be an "early adapter" then why are you forced to install X2 or even if you install it, why are you forced to use it until you're ready? if you want the strings and are going to upgrade at some point, then do it today before the presale is over. then don't use X2 until you feel the "uncertainty" is over (with X many updates or whatever criteria you will use).
