Pomplamoose
You've probably seen these folks on Hyundai commercials. I'd wondered what their story was, and found out via an article in Keyboard magazine. Turns out they are YouTube stars, who first got a Toyota gig, then the Hyundai gig as a result of home-made music videos that had received as many as 5 million views. But without ever releasing a CD! An interesting story for any indie acts looking to YouTube as a cheap form of self-promotion. What makes them stand out in a medium saturated by thousands of wannabe bands? Well, first and foremost, they are two very photogenic young people. But the videos are also refreshingly honest, a composite of live takes - no lip-syncing. They are mostly covers of pop tunes, which may be part of their YouTube success formula, since viewers are likely to discover them as a result of searching on better-known artists such as Beyonce and Lady Gaga. Now, for an out-of-touch geezer like myself, YouTube stars are usually far off my radar. But you know you're going places when you get interviewed on NPR's All Things Considered! Here's that interview.

Huge Stars! I've been showing people the videos are explaining that I think they represent the future of music marketing. It must be noted that both of the musicians are actually incredibly well educated and sophisticated... and that the singing in my bedroom routine is an incredibly effective "act". I love watching their videos and listening to their stuff. best regards, mike

I'm still trying to figure out how many accountants you need to legally license popular cover tunes for release on YouTube. Digital download licensing is in it's infancy and just recently started a transition from a huge paperwork mess with quarterly payments and statements to a "anticipation" based system where an artist can pay in advance for anticipated downloads at their discretion. It is not a mature system... but I imagine Pomplamoose is somehow figuring out how to do it without stepping on too many toes and becoming a target. Most of their *catalog* is cover material distributed via download. I think learning how to follow in their footsteps would be a huge step forward for any musician who is sick of playing bars and clubs in an effort to sell a few CDs. best regards, mike

She talks about that in the article. It's because it really is live. People look weird when they're singing for real, concentrating on pitch and intonation. In typical music videos, when you see a singer filmed behind a mic it's all staged for appearance and lip-synced. Which is not to say that their performances are not comped or massaged. In one video, the guy starts out without a beard and magically grows one by the end of the song. Some time had clearly elapsed during the making of that video. Still, they make a big deal about everything you see being a real performance.

I wondered whether that couple was real or not (i.e., musicians). Funny, my subconscious never realized who they were advertising for. Another holiday commercial that musically caught my attention was for (I believe) Honda. Catchy little tune called "Holiday' by Vampire Weekend. Maybe everyone knows of them, but they are new to me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vraoiVCDdaM&feature=player_embedded

yes! I was too. I had never seen this group UNTIL that commercial I she immediately grabbed my attention. in fact I didn't realize there was only one other guy in the "band" because I didn't pay attention to anything else but her face and eyes on that commercial. and I didn't even realize it was for Hyundai - or what they were peddling! I just focused on her and the song!

Certainly an interesting story here. The 'naive' look does seem paradoxically well considered, savvy and self-aware. But they are shifting bucket loads of mp3's so whatever they are doing it's working for them. Not my cup of tea stylistically, something like an apple pie version of the 'Ting Tings', but they obviously have huge universal appeal, as well as being ad agency friendly. Had they been members of this forum we'd all be immensely proud of them I'm sure and they've certainly illuminated one way of rising to prominence.
