In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

Yeah... Isn't it funny when people that use their ears and people that use numbers don't agree. Me? I don't really "hear" music when I'm in a vehicle so mobile music isn't something that matters to me and I do know my hearing isn't getting any better so pftt. I can use that money for more important toys.

Isn't it funny that the people who use their ears under controlled double blind testing find that they hear almost exactly what the people who bothered to learn how things work in what we call "objective reality" predict? Of course people could spend 15 minutes and do the tests for themselves, but that would imply they care about reality. I'm sorry, but it has nothing to do with "numbers" vs. "ears. It's about "knowledge" vs. "ignorance, stupidity and/or the strong desire to believe in something regardless of the evidence".

I fear too many people still think what we have is "good enough". Too many people are happy with good enough....and they already invested in a system and don't care to change...unless they are a serious audiophile.

You don't have to apologize to me Drew...I don't care what either one or any of them has to say...I make my own determination of what sounds good to me. In this case- I'll decide if I ever hear it.

So, the best time to listen to one of Bapu's bands is in the car, ya?

Is that a trick question? Bapu has bands? Am I the only one that didn't know?

One of the interesting questions in the technical community is whether they will use the same masters that are already available elsewhere for Pono, or if everything issued for Pono will be remastered specifically for the platform - which would make an apples to apples double blind comparison of the technical claims impossible (if the player doesn't offer bit perfect digital output, which the initial offering of course doesn't).

OF COURSE,.... you can load any file onto the pono player, so you should be able to easily compare like to like i like the idea of marrying this device, with a nice tube amp and excellent speakers, so at least you take one element out of the bottleneck.... the delivery of the analog side. i am lucky enough, to have heard very high end audiophile systems at various times thru my life, and i can say that true audiophile sound, for those who even care, is a true joy. but folks that listen thru crappy earbuds, are not gonna jump for joy.

batsbrew OF COURSE,.... you can load any file onto the pono player, so you should be able to easily compare like to like You're comparing the player itself to another playback device then, not the stuff they claim is making a difference - i.e. you're comparing the HW not the format.

I was reading a conversation taking place with some very talented pickup winders. One was being complimented and asked questions...he said, "well I've been doing it for over 40 years...started out on my dad's knee and the best advice I can give anybody wanting to get into the pickup winding business is before they buy their first spool of wire get a very good grip on advertising".

Dunno about Pono. You would be amazed how good current digital audio sounds when played back through a good amplifier and speakers. It's like getting a new music library. Pono will sound like garbage if you plug in a set of $9.95 ear buds. I use AKG K-240's as headphones for my iPod because I've yet to hear really good ear buds. I see them on the shelf for $200+ but I can't be persuaded to buy. How will Pono solve any of this?
Regards, John I want to make it clear that I am an Eedjit. I have no direct, or indirect, knowledge of business, the music industry, forum threads or the meaning of life. I know about amps. I sure don't know if Pono will save anything but I do know that the underwater example in that video was so funny it made me hurt. They sure enough blew away those other dudes with the drawings of an ear and soundwaves. I think they should contact Neil and get that guy with the crayons to fix up their stuff.

No kidding! I've heard some very smart people say that coming up with a great idea isn't nearly as important as how you intend to market it and that really good advertising can sell just about anything (Budweiper is an excellent example of this - worst tasting beer I've had in 18 different countries, but best marketed).
