Pop Filter

Thinkin about upgrading my pop filter. Can't think of the brand I currently have, but the material is a cotton-like fabric.

Any strong feelings around here about particularly good pop filters?

Thanks.

The stuff they make panty hose out of.....

I bought one that is pretty nice after using a home made one for a while....

But also, it's not really necessary to use a pop filter. If you sing at 45 degrees to the mike and pay attention to the sounds that cause problems, it's actually pretty easy to avoid, and the result is a cleaner sound IMHO.

I practically stopped using mine except for guest singers in the studio.

I got one of those metal mesh ones after reading glowing reviews. First time I tried it I heard a slight ringing sound in the recording. Turns out that the metal pop filter was resonating with the voice. It wasn't even that great of a pop filter either. I got rid of it.

I've never found a pop filter that stops pops. They will reduce them, sure, but not stop them. The most effective one I've found so far is the Charter Oak one http://www.charteroakacou...oducts_pf1_details.htm but even that lets through some of the low plosive sound.

I've also tried the "pencil trick" which is putting a pencil in front of the capsule to stop plosives and I've tried Panty hose and variants. Those are all worthless.

Mic technique and the Charter Oak are the best solutions.

yeah i read about that charter oaks filter a long time ago, and had forgotten about it...
    thanks for bringing that up.

    so, no worky, eh?
or at least, it's the best of the bunch?

i never had ringing with a metal filter..... that's kind of odd, but i can see how specific frequencies could interact, depending on a million factors...

a lot of times, seems a simple rubber ring around the edge, a 'surround', would calm any sympathetic vibrations.

Depends on what you mean by "works". The Charter Oak is the best of the bunch by far. But if you get an actor or singer who just can't avoid popping p's k's t's into the mic (meaning, no mic technique and having someone who can work the mic is the ultimate best solution) nothing will STOP them--that I've found so far. The Charter Oak does the best by far to reduce them, but I still need to go in and fix 'em in post.

As for the metal one, the amount of resonance was definitely voice-specific and I did try some dampening techniques. (gaff tape, weather stripping...) But just tapping the thing made it vibrate/ring which isn't a good sign. In the end I decided it wasn't worth the trouble and retired it.

I went to GC and bought a mic and there they had a metal pop filter with a metal edge ring with rubber around it (sterling or perception perhaps - one of those mics I never heard of before company) and I bought that. Seems to work well but cost @$50.

    It's a Sterling Audio PF1 pop filter.
