Pop Rock/Dance Using Sonar Samples

I recorded and produced Psycho Killer way back with Sonar 8 PE.  I used many of the stock samples included with Sonar, and added a bass synth from Dimension as well as a pad from Rapture.  Guitars and vocals were all tracked through my FireStudio Project.  I handled all the guitar duties while a friend and co/writer John Consalvo handled the vocal duties. The track was mixed in the box in my humble home recording setup!

I like the construction of the song and all the elements.  You keep the song interesting with instrument riffs and fills.  The doubling of the vocals is always something I like.  Good beat also.

One thing for me was that it was difficult to hear the instruments during the vocal sections.

Wow, you've managed to capture that psychotic energy in this song quite well.  It's atonal in part which serves this song well.  The maniacal guitar solo was also appropriate.  I'm sure this mix was difficult to manage, but I think you did a fairly good job of it.  Just in case, I'm going to keep my porch light on tonight.

    All the best,

Very interesting tune.  The production seems very well done to me.  Amazing how you did it.  Psycho killer on thedance floor.  The whole thing led to that and I can see him/her in my mind!

yea, i concur you really captured the psycho team. The addition of the tambourine sound helped bring out the dance beat really well. The atonal vocal works really well, in fact the vocals are really well treated. Maybe you could explain how you did it? Awesome guitar solo too, rippin.

Thanks for the warm feedback folks.

Whack- as per the vocals on this track.   I tracked John (singer) 4 times through the verses.  Basically running a B-2 pro condensor straight into the firestudio project that I was using back then.  Each take the on verse was very different.  I used the UAD LA2A compressor on every vocal track to squash it down and control the variances in volume.  Much of the vocal sound you hear can be attributed to creative performance.  He did one take in a lower pitched voice with some vibrato. Another take was done in a scratchier, more raspy voice and few others done more cleanly.  I ended up using a waves doubler plugin on his scratchy takes and widened out one of the clean vocal takes and added a slight delay on that.  I pushed all 4 voices to a single vocal bus where I shaped things with the standard EQ in Sonar to filter out any low rumble and shape the higher frequencies.

The guitars were tracked direct. I was using my POD X3 to lay out some heavy distortion.  The guitar I used was a custom build that I had a momentary (kill) switch installed into. So right into the second chorus, you hear that momentary switch toggled off an on which sort of created a "transformers" like sound with the distorted guitar.  I played all the guitar parts on the track, including the lead and outro licks.

The "tambourine" sound you hear was a toontrack EZ drummer tracked over top of the sampled Sonar groove.  I used the "Claustrophobic" expansion which includes many of the wild sounds you hear.  There is a dead kick and snare hitting throughout, as well as some weird washboard that was sampled in the collection.  If you listen in the beginning to what sounds like a voice say "die, die, die..." That was actually the drum sample repeated with some modulation and compression added.

That about rounds it out.  Thanks to everyone for their feedback and listening!
