Pop...?

Saw an ad in the local newsagent window yesterday 'Record Collector, vinyl records always wanted, '60's, 70's & '80's rock'.

I have a small collection of about 200 vinyl LP's & 12'' singles, which have not been out of the sleeves in 15 years, so I thought maybe it's time to get rid.

Phoned the guy and he came out to have a look. After browsing through Gentle Giant, Supertramp, Yes, Tull, Van Der Graf, Focus, Wishbone Ash, ZZ Top, Rush etc etc he said 'no, sorry, not for me I'm afraid'.

I asked why.

''Too much pop'' he said (without a hint of sarcasm), and left.

Is it me?

My flag would go up.
I'd be wondering if he had intentions other than looking for vinyl records.
Not saying that to worry you James...I'm strange maybe in that people I don't know
don't enter my house unless I've called them for their professional service...I should be specific knowing how things are..:).......such as a plumber, electrician, etc.

I know what you mean Michael, but he was a guy on his own, maybe 67-68 years old, nice little brand new hatchback 'retired person' car. I generally get a feeling about people, and he was genuine, but obviously..a bit picky when it comes to evaluating music...

The guy obviously had no clue as to what he wanted.

I have a long time acquaintance who is a record collector...he runs a successful shop, well known in the collection community...and, if his behavior is any indication, the above collectors reaction is not unusual at all. They're an interesting bunch, to say the least. My friend actually says "crap"...out loud...for each record he doesn't want as he thumbs through folks collections. A real "people" person.

Now that I think about it.  He probably just had a very narrow range of what he was looking for.  My guess--metal or punk.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot--hey, who the hell are you guys?

If it were me and I knew in advance the guy was a cherry picker, my prices would tend to go up.

That is cool. In a way I can relate to him. I mean when it comes to genres I'm at a loss.
Many of them I don't play enough to remember and have to "refresh" when I try...like "Bossa vs Samba"...
and now there are so many, so it seems.

Well, you won't have this kind of problem in the brave new age of web based digital licensing. A record collection that you can sell or bequeath to a loved one. How quaint.

He was probably looking for some progressive disco and you didn't have any.
