Pops/clicks since going to Win7 64bit @ 2ms Latency
Hi guys, I posted this in an earlier thread by someone else so not too hijack it, I post again here. I don't get much juice from running at 2ms latency. Hoping someone might have some advice. I've just run DPC and have no spikes at all. Latency hovers between 115 and 130. All drivers updated and all BIOS options (On-board Audio, Controllers, Lan) disabled. Only issue I had going to 64bit was Nvidia drivers. Had to use an older driver to avoid BSOD in 64bit. Studio PC only. Not for any other use. Still pops with 2ms Latency???? (Just 6 audio tracks with FX with 1 softsynth running - no issue on XP32bit) Win 7 64bit, Intel 2.66ghz Dualcore, Asus P5k, 8gb ram, Nvidia Geforce 7300, EMU 0404 ASIO, Sata OS HDD & Sata Audio HDD.

You have to play around with setting no magic number that everyone can use. Computers differ. Try different setting. I have one setting I use for recording and another for mixing.

What do you mean by 2ms latency? a 128 sample buffer at 44.1kHz is 2.9ms and 128 sample buffer at 48kHz 2.6ms. Are you getting clicks and pops at 128 samples? Or are you talking about roundtrip latency and running at 32 samples? Or are you at 96kHz and speaking about a 256 sample buffer? It's hard to have a perspective when the only thing to consider is "2ms". It could be that you are at the very edge of performance capability and the 64bit driver is simply choking before the 32bit. Or, you could be out in a comfort zone where it should work great and this could be an indicator of a very bad driver. It's hard to consider where you stand without some perspective... and it will be easier to understand if you state the latency in terms of total round trip latency or in samples so that we can understand how aggressive your settings are. best regards, mike

Hey Fitz, Yes always use different Sonar ASIO Latency settings. As the projects grow bigger, i drop latency. I though I'd get much more out of 2ms (highest latency setting) for my setup. Bit disappointing. Other then ASIO latency, I don't know what else I can do barring getting a new system.

I'm curious what your bottleneck is. if you bypass all fx, do the clicks stop?

A buffer is designed to buy time for the CPU; with the slack the buffer provides, the processor can handle more tasks. When the buffer size is too large, it’s delaying the data—adding latency—more than is necessary for good computer performance. But if the buffer size is too small, the processor has to work faster to keep up, making it more vulnerable to overload, so your computer-recording environment becomes less stable. PS Do a defrag of your disk. Use any defrag except the builtin windows one.

Sorry yes. Should of been clearer. In drivers settings ASIO 2ms is the fastest option I can select. I'm at 128 buffer and 44khz. Not in studio but will check and report back disabling FX. Again though DPC looks in good shape. Was debating changing Nvidia Geeforce for Radeon HD5450 as I get BSOD with latest 64bit Nvidia drivers. Do you think the vid could be a factor in this?

OK so Disabling fx give me a little more room but adding a few more softsynths will kill me again. Suprized if I was at full capabilties...

This just means either 2 things. (actually 3 things) 1.) Your PC cannot handle this project at 2ms latency. 2.) The 64bit Drvier written for that card cannot handle that setting 3.) All the above Thanks, CJ

Hmm I spose I must accept this. Can't see how else I can sqeeze anything more from it. Just to be sure though. Would a change in Graphics card possibly help here? (I did have BSOD with my Nvidia latest drivers and had to revert to older version)

Win7 x64 demands modern,as in at least 1st gen. i7 intel cpu,and even then I wouldn't want anything older than Sandy Bridge, but that's just me

There's not a great deal to be gained from running at an RTL of 2ms anyway - you'd get more delay standing any more than a foot away from a guitar cab

The only system I've ever seen handle 2ms latency with a big project was Cakewalk's demo machine, with 16GB RAM, 8 cores and SSDs. In another 10 years we probably won't even be talking about latency anymore, but for now 2ms is really pushing the limits of all but the fastest computers for anything but pure-audio projects. With high-latency mastering plugins inserted, it's a physical impossibility. The good news is you probably don't need 2ms latency. Think about how fast that is: 2ms is less time than it takes for sound to get from your monitors to your ears! Even drummers' sense of timing isn't that precise, let alone singers and guitarists. I think you'll find that a latency setting of 5.8ms for tracking will be just fine. When you start mixing and putting in effects, bump it up as high as you need, as there is no downside to long latencies when mixing.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

The only spikes on my systems (showing by LatMon...btw...hx for the tipp for that little "must have" tools) are the USB port Driver from my mainboard... After putting all USB to my seperated PCIx 1x USB/Firewire Card...no peaks, no itchings...;) ...but I have to say, that I did´nt got problems with X2, running with 64 - 128 samples, even with my D16Group LUSH101 (great synth) in heavy use with other VST´s ...no crackles.

What make you think it should work in 2ms? I see this alot over the internet in forums that you get clicks and pops in use of extreme low settings of latency. Of course it doesn't work! I can't run large project in my studio either in 2ms and I don't want or need to. Use 512-1024 (8 to 16ms) that is the normal setting in any DAW any audio interface. I see you have and use EMU 0404 ASIO. You have already zero latency monitoring in the control panel so what do you need the DAW to perfrom in 2ms for? You can already record vocals in zero latency. Are you telling us that you can't play on the VST synths in 8ms-14ms? That is even faster then the disk can even stream the files in example Kontakt or Omnisphere, if you don't use a SSD disk. Think about it my friend!
