Portable Speakers/Monitors

For those of you who do mobile recording:

Assuming your portable rig consists of a laptop, interface, headphones and mics...what do you use for that final component: speakers/monitors? The band will likely want to hear what they've tracked at some point, so do you just get inexpensive computer speakers (like offerings from Logitech or Genius) or do you bring along actual studio monitors?

Note this is just for playback only - monitoring during tracking would be done with headphones and the actual mixing would take place back at the studio.

Just curious what some of you do, as I'm setting up a mobile recording rig myself.

Well most all of my live sessions speakers would be usless anyhow, but back when I used to run a snake and find an isolated spot. I came close to buying a van for this. There is good money in live recording still to this day. Now a days you would need a board with all the possible interfaces built in ( CAT5/Madi etc)  to get your feeds from the FOH. your talking $$$$$  A lot of FOH rigs are recording directly to ProTools.

When I did set up in an isolated live set up I just brought my studio monitors and power amp along and basicily built a small studio in a closet or coffee room. Now I guess I'd be looking at a set of powered monitors. Headphones will get old fast at long sessions.

As far as portable goes, the IK iLoud line could be of use.

I got these small Alesis monitors from Guitar Center. They are $99 but go on sale.  They also have an automatic turn on and off.

Are they the Alesis Elevate 5 monitors? I've been looking at cheap monitor pairs on Sweetwater and the Elevates are currently $150. There's a pair of Behringers for $150 and a pair of PreSonus for $200. Right now the Alesis are looking good because they don't have a proprietary cable for patching the two speakers together, and user reviews on Sweetwater have been positive.
