It really belongs where it fits in the collection, but personally I like to put it dead last, for climactic effect. I've caught a lot of heat from manager/producer types who say I could've done a lot better to put it up front, but I just don't get that. How can an album sell better based on how the songs are arranged? Like Marcie is going to say to Sally, "Don't buy Thriller... the title song doesn't show up until song #4!"
A quick looksie at the best selling albums of all time which feature a title track shows no particular pattern:
1. Thriller - song #4
2. Back in Black - song #5
3. Bat out of Hell - song #1
4. Phantom of the Opera - song #6
5. Come on Over - song #6
6. Sgt. Pepper - song #1
7. Falling into You - song #3
8. Music Box (Mariah Carey, not Genesis
) - song #4
9. Dangerous - song #14 (last)
10. Let's Talk About Love - song #14 (last)
So there you have it. You can't blame poor album sales on bad song placement. I'm gonna march into my manager's office and tellim my album bombed because it flat out sucked! Huh!
