Watch as Weezna talks about Gibsons decision to stop production on Cakewalk. True Sound Studios will still continue to use Cakewalk Sonar Platinum as the one and only DAW!

So... that's all then. Gibson decided to shut the doors on Cakewalk Sonar.

So Why Did Gibson Abandon Cakewalk?

The real answer is Gibson bet big on moving Cakewalk to a subscription model and lost. Subscription models can work wonders (think Adobe) to bring in a steady income stream and thwart piracy. However, when they don’t generate numbers, it’s only a matter of time before they sink under their overhead.

    Interesting take ..

Although the "subscription" model was greeted very negatively at first, once people figured out that it wasn't the traditional extortion-based subscription model where the software died if you didn't pay up, it was quite successful in getting new users, as were lifetime updates. IMHO the main problem was that Cakewalk didn't implement alternative revenue streams that I believe could have kept the company alive. I also believe Gibson would have kept Cakewalk going even though it was losing money, if it had shown progress with new products and creating other income sources. Momentum being a major fail out of the gate was probably the final nail in the coffin, although by that time I was no longer part of Gibson so that's speculation.

I think Momentum would have been helped by a succinct description of what it actually was. It seemed to be a vague launch that didn't seem to know what it's target market was.

But in saying that, MOMENTUM was hardly out a wet week when the whole Cakewalk show was closed down. Hardly fair to say it was a fail because it didn really get enough time or marketing in fairness
