Posting threads with image files.

I have asked questions in the past that could have been easier to understand with a small screen capture, but I couldn't post it for some reason.  I've seen screen captures on others post.  Is there something I'm missing on how to post with an image?

Thanks!

Upload your image to a web server somewhere such as photobucket. Then copy the URL from that site, click on the insert image icon at the top of the reply box and then paste the URL into the box that pops up.

    That's it.........

Just like FBB said. I use Flickr to host my pics on the internet. Once you have your picture uploaded to a photo hosting site, then you right click on the pic, select properties from the drop down menu, and then copy the URL of the pic to your desktop clipboard. Now in the Reply to message form (or in the posting form) you click on the icon for photos. It's to the left of the smiley face. Then when it asks to insert photo, paste the URL into the box and your picture will display in your reply just like this.

I've never used photobucket or the like. How long do they retain your files?

    Or you can use Dropbox.com

It creates a folder on your pc which is auto-mirrored on their web site, so you never worry about uploading anything, it's all automatic.  And every file you copy into the folder gets its own web address.

Sign up here for a FREE 2Gig account and get 250Mb extra space FOR FREE.

The idea is they keep stuff indefinately, or untill the company goes bust, or you upgrade to a paid account and then forget to pay...

Bit, you can delete your images anytime you want from your Photobucket account.

Whether or not they still have them stored 'elsewhere' I don't know.

The reason I ask is that I've read old threads where people had linked images but the images were no longer available. That suggests that somebody has done some purging. I mean, what kind of business model involves accumulating other peoples' large files forever?

, what kind of business model involves accumulating other peoples' large files forever?
The kind that entices you in with free limited space/limited functions and then charges you on a sliding scale when you find you can't do without it.

I've had a myspace account for something like 4 or 5 years with all my original pictures and I've never payed a cent.

Pretty sure the pictures aren't original size....which wouldn't qualify as large files

I don't know about Photobucket, but Flickr/Yahoo has images of mine dating back at least 8 years - I think the business model is to have bragging rights to the billions of photos being hosted:

I should point out that as disks get larger and disk space gets cheaper, what we consider large today will be small in a few years.

A few years ago you would be lucky if you could get 50 - 100 Mb of free disk space in online services.  Today, services like Dropbox don't start charging untill you want more than 10Gigs. In 10 years time? Changes in storage technologies may mean unlimited storage for free, but with charges in other areas.

    Ultimately someone has to pay.

the business model is advertising my friends......offer a free service and people will come.....once they do advertise to them....then people will buy.....once you make money, buy more hard drive space for the more people that will come....then advertise to them.....you see where this is going right?

Note that as time moves on and business gets bigger....space gets cheaper....what do you think a petabyte would cost these days?

Bit, I think Karyn has hit the nail on the head - the paid account is much nicer (better tools, bigger file sizes uploadable) by the look of it, and the free Photobucket account is also plastered with ads.

I know you have a free Soundclick account (BTW, I just love It's All Right, the main riff is amazing) - surely your 'business model' point could apply to them as well? I know James and Larry have a paid Soundclick account for Slow Marching Band and it looks much better (no ads for a start) than the free account, as well as allowing 40MB 320kbps mp3's (as opposed to the free account's 10MB/128kbps limits).

I've just recently had to open a new (free) Photobucket account because my other one is now so full (2006 images!) and slow it takes ages to upload and/or edit individual images.

Hey brundlefly, a fudge.... I haven't seen one of those in a long time. I had an XJ550 several years (ok many years ago) and always longed for an FJ. You still ride?

Very nice, obviously a bit of a FJ fan. Unfortunately I've never grown up and still in my 'lunatic' phase. I do try and keep the lunacy on the track nowadays though

Wow respect.......... TL1000. They had a rep here in the UK as the "widow maker" because of the rear shock. I had a couple of mates that had them though and they said they were fine, apart from the lunacy factor of course.

I was a little more sedate and had the Honda VTR1000F twin that came out at around the same time. In fact that's it in my avatar. Not quite such a wheelie monster as the TL.

I really like twins though such fun to ride, I had an SV1000 after that which was a watered down version of the TL.

I only got cured of my twin addiction by the ZX10.

Trackdays. Most fun you can have with your clothes on, but the expense. Makes putting a studio together look cheap.

Love the crosser too BTW, in fact I'm jealous......... now I'm off to persuade the wife I need an off-roader.......

Ah, yes. I was wondering about your avatar. Didn't recognize the VTR from that angle.

I was actually looking to pick up an SV-650 when they were new in 1999, 'cause I hadn't been riding for a few years, and wanted to get something new, but cheap. I was told the SV's were all sold out for the year, so I was looking around the showroom for an alternative and saw this green thing that looked like a big SV-650. Then followed an exchange with the sales guy that went something like this:
Me: What's that on top of the triple-clamp?

Sales Guy: That's a steering damper.

Me: Hmmmm... installation is kind of kludge, i'n'it?

Sales Guy: Yes, it was a retrofit for a recall.

    Me: Why was it recalled?

Sales Guy: It tended to throw people in the ditch... a few were killed.

    Me: I'll take it!

    Kayrn,

I used to user Dropbox but Strummy said he could never see my images (yet others here could).

I switched to the paid Photobucket and if Strummy says he can't seem them now I'll say "Too many Ales".

I've been having the same problem recently with both Firefox 6 and IE 9. I installed Google Chrome to see if it made any difference and everything works fine with Chrome. So now I use Google Chrome for the Cakewalk forum and Firefox for everything else. It works out pretty good because I made the Cakewalk forum the Chrome start page so when I start Chrome, here I am.

I suspect that Cakewalk's last forum software update was ill conceived and poorly executed.
