Practice Tracks

I want to create some practice tracks to enhance my morning workouts. I'm thinking of using midi to do a bass/ keys/drums in PRV. Mostly altered iib5-V7altered loops.  Has anyone recorded anything like this? Thanks for any input on this subject!

You work out in the mornings?  Man, I have a hard enough time just getting out of bed by 8am....

Aside from the aspect of doing your own tracks.....and the fun that it entails.... maybe it would be easier to buy one of the DVD's with the foxy chicks dancing around in skin tight body suits, to give even more of a reason to workout early in the morning..... for you.......................... not me.

I only roll out of bed when I find it is too much effort to go back to sleep. Or my wife is in one of those snoring moods..... can't sleep, gotta get up and fix coffee.

Actually Bill, I do work out, but not in the mornings. Mostly now, my workouts are in the evenings after supper. I quit that early morning stuff after I got out of the service...... I remember being on the PT field and running track many a day with a serious sweat worked up before the sun was even on the horizon. Not any more.

What I was asking about was ways of creating practice clips to help with whatever musical situation that comes up. However, these DVD's you speaking of could come into use during breaks, while I'm mindlessly doing technique exercises, lunch, dinner, combing my hair, cutting my toe nails, relaxing, drinking coffee, drinking water, drinking Gatorade, drinking, talking to relatives on the phone, scanning the forum, this list could go on forever. I revamp my practice schedule once an month and I'm checking on ways to speed up the process of working out problems in my technical execution. it's breaktime!

Oh...excuse me.... you meant early morning "GUITAR practice" workouts....

Oh my...what a blunder on my part for assuming you meant that you get out of bed and go run 3 miles or some such nonsense.

Now... if I can just get that image of you in speedo's prancing around with Richard Simmons video's, out of my mind.....

The best I can do is fall out of bed in the mornings. As far as speedos goes I got tired of people throwing up at  that sight of me in them so I no longer wear speedos. I've converted to nudity instead. OOPs that image is even worse

Part of the reason I bought Sonar and updated all my gear is to put together lessons and practice tracks. I don't see why it wouldn't work for what you want. The fact you create stuff that is in perfect timing with MIDI it's great for practice. What exactly are you looking to do?

I definately recommend Midi instruments.  This way, when you loop sections, you can change tempo and/or key very easily

I seem to change everyday as far as what I'm working on. Let's say I want to run and altered set of chords in a specific key. Say Bm7 - E7b9 -Am7b5 to D7#9. I'm looking for the fastest way make a clip to run thru and explore then move to the actual tune. Note I said fastest. I usually spend about 2 hours a day of repertoire whether Rock or music from the Real Book. Being able to cover the most material without spending too much time on a drum or bass part is what I need to do. Be able to set up specific time signatures and progressions etc.

I used to use Jammer a bit and I've often imagined that BIAB was similar and  does this easily.

In Jammer you could construct a chord change sequence on a time line and automatically add jam tracks.

It never sounded better than cheesy but it let me explore chord changes quickly and easily.

Well there's been some kerfuffle upstairs about the staff view but really this is something it would be great for. Just toss your chords onto that or the tablature option at the beats you want, enable the metronome and have at 'er. Do you own Guitar Pro? That might help too but I find it overly complicated. They do have a free demo but you can't save the files. However if you just want to toss down some quick chords and jam along then discard it it might be easier. If that ain't to your taste I could come up with some more ideas for ya. Cheers.

yes...I imagine that BB would be an excellent way to quickly try different styles and patterns.  After you have a basic song or progression in the grid.... it's simply a matter of changing the tempo, key, and style to anything that you want.  The version of BB which I have currently has over 3000 different styles.... not that you would want to use them all.  Many of these styles are midi and as Mike points out...do sound cheesy. But for practice..... would that matter much?
However, one major drawback I have seen with it is the meter.... I don't think you can easily change to much beyond 4/4 or 3/4.  There are a few styles that are in some "unique" time signatures, but mostly you have 2 main time sigs to work with.

Since much of the music we play and listen to is in these 2 time sigs, it would probably be OK.

BB definately gets my vote due to the simplicity of inputing the chords. I use it for just that.

Followed by GP6, which is not, IMHO, difficult to use.

Cheers,
Jerry
