Preset automation in Guitar Rig 4

This has been driving me crazy for several weeks now. I have set up two presets in Guitar Rig 4 (a clean sound and a distorted sound), and I want Sonar to automatically switch presets when I get to the guitar solo. Info: I did the guitar part on a keyboard, saving a MIDI track, which feeds Garritan JABB with the track set for guitar. The guitar part goes to my bus, where I have Guitar Rig 4 inserted as an effect. I have read the manuals for Sonar and Guitar Rig, and cannot find a way to automate selecting the preset. I'd appreciate any help.

    I may be missing something as I haven't had the need to change presets in the middle of a track with Guitar Rig, but when used as a plug-in, AFAIK Guitar Rig doesan't have a MIDI input so you can't use a MIDI command to change presets. IOW you can't create a MIDI track with program changes, then assign that output to Guitar Rig. I also don't think preset changes can be done with automation, but maybe someone else has figured that out.

    Why not just put the guitar solo on a separate track, and include an instance of Guitar Rig with the preset you want in that track?

    Then again...here's another option.

    Each effect's "power" switch can be automated. Right-click on it, and you can see the automation controller ID. So for example if you use the AC Box for rhythm and the Cool Plex for lead, you can turn one off while turning on the other with two different automation controllers.

    GuitarRig has MIDI input as a plugin, but you have to trick Sonar into allowing MIDI to be routed to it. It can be done by "Configure as Synth" in the Plugin Manager and then insert it in the track's FX bin instead of the synth rack. That in turn allows you to route a MIDI track's output to GuitarRig (which can host a clip with your controller messages, or can serve as a live input for controllers).

    The following applies to GuitarRig5, I don't know whether it works with earlier versions:
    In GuitarRig open the Options tab on the left side and in there the Controller tab. Learn whatever MIDI event you want to use to switch to a certain preset (you should be able to create the events on the feeding MIDI track to make the learn easier without having to send the message from an outboard device) and click the "Menu" button for that controller. Go "Preset selection -> Jump to" and choose your first preset (out of a horribly long list). Then click "Add Controller" to do the same for your second preset.

    Disclaimer: I never did exactly this in Sonar, it's way easier in other hosts which allow MIDI input to audio FX plugins without tricks. But I used this workaround to control GR's wah pedal with CC messages in the past. I am pretty confident it will work. I have right now GR plugin switching presets driven by a MIDI clip in another host, so from GR's side there is no problem.


    EDIT: Just looked and GR4 's controller assignment page looks much the same and allows to learn "Jump to preset", so you should be able to do it .
