Previewing MIDI drum patterns with BFD Drums, Supreme drums, and other software ?

I have recently started using BFD drums extensively --- As you probably know they have their own Groove Clip format that can easily let you preview the patterns inside the BFD interface ------------ Now also of course, you can use standard MIDI drum patterns also from various sources ----------- Question - How do you quickly preview these MIDI clips to find the patterns you want ? ----------------- It seems the only way it can be done is drag the MIDI into an empty Track with PRV (or track view) and see if it sounds like what you want, then remove it, drag another and listen, etc..etc..etc... I was wondering if there was a quicker preview trick ?

Hi Mike, do you have X1? If so, you can just do it from your media browser window. It has a preview built into it. If you like it, you just drag and drop it. If you're using 8.5 though, you won't have this ability.

I had X1, but switched back after a few months due to the fact it seems PRV and Midi took a step backwards ........... weird glitches and stability problems that I never had with 8X and I HATED that "smart tool" that always seemed to pick some other function than what I wanted to do So I am in 8.5 again Is this MEDIA PREVIEW browser in X1 actually playing the MIDI thru the BFD software and sound library ------------- or -------------- does it simply use something like Win Media Player to play the preview in some generic MIDI format ?

I have kind of been waiting for X2, X3 ??? before taking the risk of experimenting with the new design

I totally understand what you mean there. I'm not totally sold on X1, but in spite of a few little things that annoy me, it's been a pretty solid experience for me. My biggest issue is learning the new system involved with using it compared to my old ways...not to mention, I too hate the smart tool. But I'm getting used to it...and getting used to X1 on the whole. Most of which has been me trying to give it a chance as well as use it because I paid for it...and I know that this is going to be the future for Sonar. Trust me Mike, I've been so contrary with my thoughts on X1...I feel like a contradiction machine and admit it.

In one post I can't do without some of the cool features...in another, I'm crying like a 14 year old because I want my color options back, I'd like the text and formatting to be different, I wish we had more options all across the board that would at least allow me to use the work ethics I've been using since Sonar 1 that just work for me....there's a whole list of gripes for me that outweigh my likes for X1. But, this is why I still use both and use 8.5 for my important project because I still have some inconsistencies with X1 that drive me nuts. When it crashes...it just shuts down and I see my desktop. No warning, no chance to save, no nothing...it just dies. But anyway...

Good question on if preview works within BFD. I believe it does because how else could you preview a midi loop, know what I mean? We don't have a dedicated midi sound source...so it must route into BFD or whatever module you have up. I can't say for sure though...but I will check it for you right now and get back with an answer. Thank God, I'm a drummer and have a real kit plus a V Drums kit here...so I don't ever have to mess with loops of any kind. I'll get back to you in a few.

Yes Mike...it's just as I said. Whatever module you have loaded up in X1, pressing the preview on a midi loop will play through BFD, EZD, Session Drummer, Superior etc.
