Prime Studio Caribou Mix plugin -- yet another Neve EQ?!?!? YES!
Hi guys,
Allow me to direct your attention to a software version of the oft-emulated 1073 three-band equalizer. You know, the same unit that's been modeled by Waves, UAD, Slate, IK, Sonimus, and other fine developers already. So why should you care about another one?
The mind-blowing sound, that's why.
There's a new generation of Nebula-based plugins now arriving. This one is from
Prime Studios, part of their "Caribou" collection which includes the EQ, a compressor (apparently a 2254 model) and a filter/preamp. They're still a little rough around the edges with respect to the download/authorization process, the GUI behavior, and resource usage. Not for weak CPUs, by any means. But well worth checking out now, if only to get a taste of what's possible with the latest and greatest ITB tech.
Just inserting the Caribou Mix plugin on a track, bus, or master results in a sound so sweet, deep, shiny, and beautiful that it's hard to fully describe. Here, just check out this video to get an idea:
Pro Tools Expert - Prime Studio Plugins Overview This covers all three plugins, but I think the EQ is the star of the show here. Its demo is near the end of the vid.
Running the plugin is a little different. You have to turn on each band of the EQ first before using it, and there's a bit of a lag in the controls. This is a byproduct of the underlying Nebula tech, which is based on impulses (you can see all the vector files in the CARIBOUT folder).
Before downloading, be aware that the installation is rather convoluted. Here's a brief outline of the procedure:
- Register on the site and download the demo, run the installer
- Scan the plugin and open it in your DAW. On the plugin GUI you should see a message "Please authorize this plugin" --don't try running audio thru the plugin yet! Really! It's not nice! You'll blow your monitors and/or ears!
- Close the DAW. In your filesystem where the plugin was installed, e.g. C:\Program Files\VstPlugins\acustica64, you should see a file named CARMTRL.SER
- On the Prime site, click the link for the "Activation Tool" - upload the .SER file there
- You'll receive via email a file named CARMTRL.aut, put that where the SER was located. The plugin is now ready for use.
- As a bonus, you'll get a link for a free preamp plugin called CHARLY. This is fun to try, but don't expect miracles. It's subtle.
A bit of a pain, but worth it. If your reaction is similar to mine, you'll realize that all other plugins and even hardware will sooner or later be obsolete. Have fun!!
Cheers,
Eddie
