Pro Channel EQ - Causing Glitches

Ok this is annoying! Some of you may have noticed in another recent post that I mentioned I avoid my Pro Channel because its CPU intensive. I was then shocked by how many people have absolutely no issues with theirs - so why is mine so bad?? I have a powerful PC - 64 bit, Windows 7. I believe the issue is on the EQ only. When I sweep frequencies, play back glitches and 'motorboats' for a second or two and then commences. I literally can't use the EQ because of it. I am not running the signal through any other plug ins, no busses, nothing on the master. It's driving me crazy because the Pro Channel is one of the biggest reasons I upgraded to Sonar X2. Sonitus EQ works absolutely fine. Does anyone have any ideas? Please let me know if you need more information. Many thanks, Dave

So which rate are you using?

If it's 384KHz, what happens if you drop your sample rate to something more, er, practical?

have you tried playing with your buffers ?
its got to be soundcard related.
ive never even heard of such a thing with the pro channel.(not to say this is all in your head,i know its not)
but this is something to do with your sample rate or buffers in que.
or something with the m audio card.

Hi guys thanks for taking the time to help me out. GIM - Re-installing would be a nightmare for me as I am a real amateur when it comes to removing and re-installing large programs like Sonar. I feel out of my depth. Plus, Rain Computers built my PC for me and installed Sonar themselves meaning I'm not familiar with the process. Could you explain to me what 'AUD.ini' is? Also the process of uninstalling and re-installing? How does it effect my license etc (it's a download only version). Rain split my drives into a main and an Audio drive and installed various parts of Sonar into different areas - I'd have no idea how to do that. Sorry for the furious amount of questions but this really makes me nervous. Chucklebaby - I would very much like to exhaust your soundcard theory before re-installing. I have the latest M Audio drivers, a decent sample rate...what else could it be do you think? Many thanks again, Dave

Ok - this is odd. I changed my soundcard buffer size to 512 samples. Then I booted up Sonar and played around with the EQ and it now works like a dream. However, thinking that it was the buffer size that had been the problem, I looked again and noticed that the buffer size is actually still reading as 384. It hadn't changed for some reason. Whaaa?? I have a nasty feeling that this will be an intermittent problem. Does anyone know what might be going on?

Are you using ASIO? And which card are you actually using?

Hi John, yes I have ASIO selected in my preferences. I'm using an M Audio Audiophile 192 sound card. Could it be that I have an incorrect setting elsewhere in my Sonar preferences? Let me know if you need more info. Thanks

Make sure that no other sound card or audio device is also selected in preferences. Be sure that your project is set to the same sample rate as your card. Then goto the control panel of the Audiophile 192 and set the buffer to 512 if that gives you the best performance.

I would also check your DPC latency. You can do a search for DPC latency checker. DL it and see where you stand.

I posted about the PC EQ about a year ago. About 80% of the time when I sweep the EQ my project will stop...as if you hit the space bar. It starts back up just fine...but very seldom will it let me sweep any freq in the EQ. Actually, it's not only sweeping the EQ, but adjusting ANYTHING that has to do with the PC EQ.

    Re:Pro Channel EQ - Causing Glitches 2013/05/11 00:49:41 (permalink)
I was able to run Sonar X1 a few years back, Pro Channel didn't glitch on that system, some drum software was a little intense, when the synth was opened, on that computer, so I would shut down sonar goto the M audio and tweak between 384 samples or 512, this was a Eco dual core that I purchased during a rough patch, same card Audiophile 2496

Then when I purchased a 64 bit win 7 for my Sonar, I installed my trusty Audiophile card, all seemed okay at first, but once I went through the process of installing all my softsynths, I was disappointed that I had to resort to 512 or higher for glitch free playback.....

Of course I tried DPC latency checker, it indicated that my new system had resources that resulted spiking as indicated by that software .....But What?

So yeah I tried suggestions of win 7 tweaks recommended from various sites....no cure

One day I decided to go to system configuration and turned off all services then reboot....my computer looked like win XP Sonar launched and I was able to crank down the ASIO to 64 samples and the new system worked like a charm

Downside....no I tunes....internet.....media player,,,,yikes,,,,,so I started guessing what services I would need but didn't make much headway.... I turned all the services back on a presto Sonar was able to work fine on 64 samples

What I learned from this forum is most members have different issues with their system, there is not a common denominator to disappointing performance

This problem has returned - as predicted. It is really devaluing Sonar X2.
