They're doing an experiment in how NOT to upgrade an existing product.

Apparently, they're in the process of upgrading user's accounts, and we should all be set w/in the next few days.

Not that I see any urge to install it - I only installed the latest 11.x update last week... 12 isn't exactly exciting either.

Just checked my account again and nothing....

They're losing points by the minute...

This has to be the WORST product launch in history (or at least really close to)

PT 12 native still has a crippled input monitoring function just like all previous versions. It looks to me like Avid thinks the trend is for collaborating over the internet so that's where the put all their marbles. They have turned their back on home recordist, IMHO.

I'm staying put with PT 11.

Re: Pro Tools 12 released 2015/03/24 21:27:11 (permalink)
I made a point in not upgrading the OS of my newest studio computer, so it's implicit that I'll reach a point where upgrading PT is impossible. I've also acquired a Command 8 from a friend who's moving back to Canada, and I plan on keeping it a part of my set up as long as possible - so, there again, upgrades will be limited.

But if it works...

As I pointed out a few times, my brother-in-law still runs Pro Tools TDM 5.x or 6 on an old G4 - his rig must be 12 or 13 years old at least, and still working A1. :)

Re: Pro Tools 12 released 2015/03/24 21:39:28 (permalink)
So, after it appeared in my account I downloaded and installed.
No danger, I don't keep anything on my PT PC, so wasn't concerned,
and I can always just reinstall 11 if I need to...

Xpand refuses to install with the New App Manager,
I went back to download from my Avid account and PT12
was gone, and there were 2 places where PT 11 now resides...

So, that being said...I'm just waiting for my license to hit my
iLok....I'll install Xpand when it finally allows me to...

Also there is tremendous stink at Pro Tools Expert on this...

Also, there were claims made that PT12 had a significant performance
increase so PTE put them both to the test and found

NO SIGNIFICANT PERFORMANCE INCREASE

Go figure...

The problem is that, in this specific case, there doesn't seem to be much enthusiasm to counterbalance.  The fact that there is basically nothing to get excited about doesn't help, I'm sure.

LOL

Seems even the guys at Pro Tools Expert can hardly even remain neutral...

Lifted from AVID's own forum: (http://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=365942)

Russ Hughes:
"Bugger all (British for "nothing at all") I don't know. I've promised I won't Avid bash, but I'm finding it really hard not to say anything about this, because, let me just say it's the fastest version of Pro Tools I've ever un-installed from my machine in my life, it lasted less than an hour."

[Excerpts below condensed for clarity]

"It removed my Pro Tools 11. There's no track freeze. There's no collaboration. The store has the sum total of 1 plugin for sale. It is embarrassing, shameful, words fail me. If it was April the first, I'd understand. Don't waste your time, your money, your bandwidth, the **** of taking it off your machine and re-installing Pro Tools 11. I am speechless by this. I don't know what Avid wants us to say. Yeah. I don't want to say it. There is zero reason to update. It's a joke. Sorry. I don't even know if we should even bother."

Mike Thornton:
"I did assume the collaboration and track freeze would be there, that's incredibly disappointing that it's not there. That was the key feature. I have a perfectly working system, I'm carrying on with what I've got."

Installed and working.  Minor appearance differences (Very minor).
Other then that....not much...but I don't think I'd dismiss it so
quickly...

Granted, Avid has most definitely "screwed the pooch" on the launch...
but it seems to be a viable offering, especially once they start getting
the updates out...(track freeze, etc...)

You have to start somewhere...so we'll see how all this "pans out" LOL

That's a concept I have to familiarize myself with I admit - a major upgrade which technically does nothing but set the table for some future upgrades.

It's almost as if they're asking you to pay again for the exact same software that you already own so that you eventually are eligible to some new features that may or may not be useful to you.

The whole thing is kind of backwards.

Yes, in a way...

Luckily for me, my upgrade was free...

AND you can still run 11 concurrently...you just have to reinstall it...
so it's not "gone"...which is a good thing...but it would have been nice
to have been given the option of keeping it during install...

Well it is now THURSDAY, and, from what I've read in the PT Forum,
no one that is entitled to the free upgrade has received it yet.

We have received 30 day "temp" licenses to run the software that appeared
in our accounts for about 2 hours and then disappeared again...but that's it...

This is not going to bode well for Avid...not at all....

2 weeks and still no license....Avid is HORRENDOUS...

They say

Well it takes time to process the upgrades....2 weeks?  Seriously?

That is completely unacceptable....sorry...I don't care what excuse
you use, unless your whole company went out of business...
which is becoming an increased likelihood daily....
