Pro Tools and Sonar
In Pro Tools, in mix, you can, with one click select one plugin for all inserts....Can you do the same in sonar Console view. while I understand the Pro Tool mix area well, I still have difficulty with sends and resturns. Am I the only one! I also do not know how to change colors for channels and busses.

Not with one click I don't think. You can quick group the tracks and insert the effect but if you want that effect's parameters to remain consistent across all the tracks I'm not sure how or if you can link them. You could however just send those tracks to a bus with the effect on it via sends or change the track output. That's how I do it. Much simpler.

How do you visual this with different colors and gruouping. I can find my way around it, but I always have to "kind of study it", rather than just glance over it.

Not sure what you mean but the color options are a little limited in Sonar. I don't use them much but there is are a few pretty straightforward sections in the manual about what you can do. Some of it has to be done VIA the Preferences menu but you can assign colors to more specific things too. I forget what that feature is called or how to access it.

Ah, sorry. I never could figure out how to link my insert effects across tracks. That's why I use busses now. What exactly are you trying to do? Like what effect for what end result? BTW... I'm still learning myself so my advice may not be the greatest for stuff like this but I will try to help you find a solution if I can. Cheers.

I am trying to switch from pro tools, as for Ilok issues, and trying to learn, as I have outboard as well. So far, most of the stuff its kind of similar, exept for mix/console view. I am trying to figure this out, so I could effectivlly use it. I do find, routing issues a bit confusing.... I also could not find shortcut instructions, how do you minimize track view. all tracks -to one line each?

Okay, I think I might be getting what you are talking about. I've never used Pro Tools but from the videos I've seen when you insert an effect you get a little popup track fader that controls the effect and you can send out to that effect. I think what you want to do is use the Send module on the Console View channel strips. So instead of that little popup you're gonna be using a bus in the bus section of the Console View. On the track channel click in Console View go to the Sends module. I'm not at my DAW right now and I'm a little brain fried but I think you can right click on it and select Insert Send Assistant. That will allow you to select an effect and create a bus all at once. You could also do it manually by just inserting a bus, adding the effect to the bus, quick grouping the tracks you want sent to that bus, right clicking the Sends module and selecting the bus. Now that send will be going out to the bus and the little send level knob will act like the fader of the insert pop up fader would in Pro Tools. Your main track output though will still be going to whatever you have it set to (like the Master bus). So you use the Send module level knob to adjust how much signal is going to your effect bus and the main fader to send out to the master. I believe this is summed so watch your levels. You can also set the Send module to be Pre or Post fader so if you want the main track fader to effect how much signal is sent out to the effect bus set it to Post. If you want to be able to move the main track fader and still have the send level stay the same select Pre.

There are sections in the manual regarding Zoom issues and a general binding list. You can collapse all tracks at once but I'll have to look at my notes.

Here's my complete Keybinding list. I'm too brain fried right now to dig through all that for the collapse binding if it's even in there. You may just have to use the arrow keys with a modifier. DEFAULT KEY BINDINGS

Yeah, I'm not seeing collapse all in there. You can turn on the Auto track zoom and set the height of the tracks that aren't in focus to be totally collapsed then anytime you bring another track in focus the rest will collapse to their smallest height. Best I've got but I'm sure there is a collapse all binding. Can't believe it's not on my list. Fudge.

Read up on the Sends module and the Insert Send Assistant in the manual and check out some of the various vids on youtube or here on site on the Cake University/TV page. The Sends module replaces the Insert fader stuff from Pro Tools. And I'm glad to help. Cheers. Here's the link to all the onsite vids... http://www.cakewalk.com/CakeTV/default.aspx

When not using auto-zoom, you can use ctrl+a to select all tracks. Then hold down shift while resizing and all tracks will resize the same. There is a minimum track width though. If you want to see a view of your clips really minimized you can use the navigator (alt+n, I believe).

PGM I also could not find shortcut instructions, how do you minimize track view. all tracks -to one line each? Hey PGM, You can also set up/bind the following keyboard shortcuts if not already in Sonar default settings: P for Preferences/Advanced/Keyboard Shortcuts/ Track View, From Beepster's list, Zoom = CTRL + Arrow Keys (this should give you the min/max track view action you want) From my list, Console View, Ctrl+(whatever key makes sense to you & not already used), I use Ctrl+[ for Strips|Widen All Strips. " , Ctrl+( again whatever key... " " " ), I use Ctrl+] for Strips|Narrow All Strips. Don't forget to export/save your custom key bindings to the binding folder once you have them set up. As far as linking effects across multiple tracks, read up on Quick Group & Control Group in the help file. Some quick experimenting with combinations of these settings yielded some of the results I think you might be looking for. Best, HeyDan

For your main track input/outputs there is a little module at the bottom of the strip. It may be hidden. I think you can check this in the Strips (It think that's the menu name but I'm not in front of my DAW) menu of the console. There you can hide/show various channel strip modules. As far as the sends again I forget how it displays the routing but that's where you'd look for what's being sent to what even if it takes a Right Click to look at the menu. As far as colors showing you what's what you might want to take a look at how to use Icons to give you visual cues for stuff. Just right click on the default track or bus Icon and select Load Icon. It'll let you choose from a set of icon images, colors and graphics that came with Sonar or you can even create your own and load them from somewhere else on your computer or just save them to the icons folder. Another thing that can help is going to the Edit > Preferences > Customization (I think) > Colors and change the background/forground color of where the track name is displayed. For example I have left my tracks left at default blue and my busses are red so I know if I'm messing around with a track or a buss. There are also other options that allow you to assign colors to linked tracks and parameters but I'm not as familiar with those options. They are described in the manual. Again... I'm still a learning myself so my apologies if I screwed anything up. Cheers.

Oh and don't forget about the Track Inspector. May not help with these specific issues but there is a lot of extra info in the various views of the Inspector. Just click on a track to bring it into "focus" and press the I key. The Inspector will pop up by default on the left side of the screen. Click on the tabs at the top to see various info and parameters for that channel. You may have already known that but it's really worth digging into as it's a really cool feature and there are lots of hidden goodies there. Cheers.

Is your whole buss strip is red, or just knobs.....is the preferences only place you can change colors.....very time consuming...can we just change oveall strip color...its transparent anyway? I know for inspector, it took me few hour to realise, thats only place you can lower octave on keys is there..... It was a good excercise!

The way I've done it only changes the color of the little bubble where the track name is. There is no way to change the color of the entire strip by default. Sonar used to have lots more color options but they were removed in the X series. There have been a couple guys who created some mods that would make the colors and other stuff more customizable but I'm not sure what's out there for X2 if anything. I don't think you are going to be able to customize your colors exactly the way you want if I'm understanding you correctly but you might be able to at least find a method that works a little better for you. The color stuff is VERY different than Pro Tools from what I've seen and quite a bit more restricted. A lot of guys are pretty angry about this but as someone who's never experienced the old ways (I've only been a user since X1) I've just of rolled with what we've got. I actually never even bothered with colors or icons for a long time but now that my routing and buss setups are getting more complex I'm finding that Icons are indeed quite useful and to a lesser extent the limited color options. You just kind of have to poke around at it for a while to see what works best. Cheers.

Sonar did have some real good color options. But that changed with X1. With X2 we all were hoping it would come back full force, but that didn't happen. As beep says, colors are limited in X2.
