ProChannel "level LED" question

Okay, I feel dumb asking this, but does anyone else struggle with levels when using ProChannel?  I've been slowly switching some 8.5.3/Sonitus projects to X1/ProChannel, and noticed that the ProChannel output LEDs for compressor and/or EQ are almost always yellow/blinking red.  I end up fiddling with the compressor's input and make-up gain, the track gain, etc, until the lights are mostly green.  Afterwards, the track is usually drastically quieter than before, and I end up cranking the channel's fader.
Am I doing something fundamentally wrong?  My audio files aren't that loud, aren't clipping.

When I was working with Sonitus and didn't have an "LED", was it clipping internally and I just didn't notice?

Excuse my ignorance if I'm asking something very basic

Thanks!

Ignore the lights. Use your ears.   I am always in the yellow with those.

Thank you!!  I didn't hear anything offensive when it was yellow, but thought maybe I'm just getting old

Try this. Ratio set to 4. Turn the input up until the meter shows -4 db. Now turn the output up +4db. Now turn the Comp off then on. Should be louder with it on and of course more 'compressed' by about 4db. Shouldn't be qiuter. Adjust attack and release to taste.
