Problem Recording Midi And Audio

Hey Guys, been lurking around here occasionally ever since I picked up X2 Essentials a couple of months ago. I've been able to answer all my questions and problems by reading your posts and from the manual. But about two weeks ago I got a midi controller ( Alesis Q49 ) and got in on the IK Multimedia group buy deal to learn how to tickle the Ivory. So last night I try to record with Sampletank and nothing. I armed the track, had input echo on, can hear me playing thru the monitors. All the meters on input, track and master are registering. I have the input set for the Q49. Went thru all settings and preferences and can find nothing wrong I can see. After I record a short clip there is no midi information or nothing on the track. I can manually input notes in the PRV view and everything plays fine. I can also drop a midi file into the instrument track or a midi track and it plays fine. After losing a half night of sleep I decided to see if this is just a midi problem, so I created a new project and tried to record some guitar on a audio track like I've done for two months and the same thing happened, no waveform or sound was on the track. I'm sure this is just a box checked/unchecked or a routing problem. Thanks for any help you can give me, just remember I'm a newbie to this.

These are probably unrelated problems. For the MIDI issue, the only thing I can think is that maybe you have the keyboard connected by both USB and MIDI DIN ports, and the simultaneous MIDI from both sources is causing issues due to Ye Olde MIDI Crosstalk Bug that has never been completely resolved. You'll want to disconnect one or the other.

For the audio recording issue, make sure you have correct Playback and Record Timing masters set in preferences, and see this post for steps to watch what SONAR is doing in the way of audio and picture cache file-writing:

The user in that thread solved the problem by disabling Allow Arm Changes During Playback/Record in Preferences (see post #10)

Can you elaborate on how you defined your sound card. List all settings in the preference menu and elaborate in great detail how you defined your midi ins and outs a and how you are inserting soft synths, including if your using an audio and midi track or just an instrument track for your soft synths.

    Thanks for the replies,

Brundlefly,  I read the posts you gave and the first thing I did was checked to see if  "Allow Arm Changes During Playback/Record" was not checked. It was not.  I checked it to see if there was any difference and there was none. Then I did exactly as you said in the other post you gave and when I started recording on an audio track a file came up 4kb in size, Test 1 in the audio folder.. But when I stopped recording it went away. The only new file that came up in the picture cache was a temp file named E7B7. I would also like to say there is no waveform when recording or after I stop recording. The same with trying to record midi, no notes appear. My Playback and Recording Timing Masters are Playback = Alpha Asio Out L. And Recording Timing Master = Alpha Asio In. Those are the only choices and I have never fooled with them. As far as the midi issue the only thing I have connected to this computer is the Lexicon Alpha USB audio interface and the usb midi controller.

CJaysMusic, As far as inserting soft synths I do it both ways> Sometimes I just insert the synth and play through it and sometimes I insert a midi track and have the output of that track going to the synth. As far as my soundcard goes, in the preferences the Audio Devices input driver is Alpha Asio In and the output driver is Alpha Asio Out L. These are both checked and the only choices. The driver is Asio and Dithering is Triangular. In the Midi Devices section the input is Q49 which is checked and the only choice.  The Output has two choices Q49 and Microsoft Wavetable Synth, both are unchecked. In the Midi Instruments section there is nothing in the Output/Channel section and the Uses Instrument box there is about ten different choices (General Mid, General Midi Drums, Generic, Roland GS etc. and the Save Settings for Next Session box is checked. If you need anymore info just let me know and thanks again for the reply.

Hmmm... I can't imagine how you could hear output from the soft synth, which implies MIDI is being received and echoed, without being able to record that MIDI. And it seems too coincidental that you are having the same issue with audio recording - not seeing a preview waveform while recording.

I have to ask are you hitting R on your PC keyboard or clicking the record button in the transport module of the Control Bar to start recording? Almost seems like maybe you are arming tracks, and then hitting Spacebar which only starts Playback.

Man do I feel frigging stupid, I could have swore I've done it that way before. I was hitting the spacebar . I thought it did both, start playback and start recording. I told you I was a newb. I'm integrating over from a Boss multitrack.
Thanks for your help, I owe you a beer.
