Problem with DVD/CD drive

I am still using my Roseberry built rack mounted system and developed an issue last night. My CD drive will not play back a CD in real time without stuttering badly.  Howeer,  It will record the CD to Windows Media Player and play back just fine from that.  Do I just need to stop by the store and pick up a new drive?

I've found that over the years, I've replaced more optical drives than anything else.

They seem to be quite fragile compared to most other pc components.

Given time for enough attempts a failing optical drive can deliver the data from a good CD or a good optical drive can deliver data from a compromised CD. In real time there may not be time to re-read the data before a dropout occurs. If the problem happens with all CD's, then most likely the drive is failing. If only some CD's drop out then the CD's are suspect. The drives are cheap and easy to replace.

    Hi Steve,

FWIW, It sounds like the drive is failing...
You can get a good replacement locally for $25-$35.

Shoot me an Email if you want a specific recommendation.

    Best Regards,

As the other replies here are saying: might be a good time to buy a new one.

But: if you never have used a laser lens cleaner for it - this might be a good time to find that thing in your drawer.

If you dont have it: Radioshack or every else radio/electric store has it.
I think for example this one might do it for you.
