Problem with MIDI keyboard and VSTi

My problem is, that there is latency between playing the keyboard and hearing the sound. This problem is only with VST instruments, there is no latency at all when I use Microsoft GS Wavetable synth. The latency started today, it worked just fine yesteday.

Your version of Sonar does not work on Mondays.  Wait until tomorrow and the latency problem will go away again.

This does work for others and seems to have worked for you in the past, so obviously you broke something...

To get help you are going to have to provide a lot more information   What version of Sonar are you using, What your computer system is configured like (CPU memort, operating system), What audio interface you are using, What VSTis are you using etc.  You aren't going to get any help if the only information that you provide is that its broken.

If I understand things right the Microsoft GS synth is in the hardware of your computer so it doesn't need any processor slices from the computer to do it's sound. Any vst instrument needs processor time to make it's sound and samplers will need even more time to pull the samples from your hard drive. Not too mention the latency coming from your sound device, which from the sounds of it is the internal soundcard of your computer which is NEVER a good thing when doing any kind of audio recording, especially with a program like Sonar.

Spend the bucks and get a real soundcard/device that runs off your USB or Firewire ports or even an internal card that goes in your pci(e) slots if you have a desktop computer. Run the ASIO driver for it and you can get lower latency.

And really - we need to know more about your system to help.

I solved the problem. I just changed mixing latency settings. But after that came new problem. Sonar is playing all audio too quiet. I hear it only when I adjust volume to full. Otherwise it's too quiet. When I changed Audio Driver Bit Depth from 24 to 16 it worked fine, but if change it bakc to 24 it is again too quiet. And if change driver mode from MME (32-bit) to ASIO it works fine. I have also Lexicon Alpha USB audio interface and when I tried use that, volume was fine.

I'm using Sonar 6 and this has happened once before, but I don't remember how I solved it.

Use only the Lexicon and ASIO drivers  with SONAR (prefer 24 bits).
MME 32 is the poorest of drivers, usually meant to be used only with the integrated soundchips (Realteks and such).

The MS Wavetable synth is also a poor choice, because you can't for example bounce it normally.

And,as already mentioned, when you ask a question it's reasonable to expect you also give the info needed for answering.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.
The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Thanks, now I use only Lexicon and it works fine.
