Problem with Sonar X1 and Kontakt

Hello, I'm a newbie of Sonar X1, I'm trying to use the 64bit version with Kontakt 4 (64bit).

What I need to do is this: I have two instruments loaded in Kontakt, and I'd like to route their outputs to separate audio tracks, so I can apply effects to them.

I have tried choosing Kontakt channels as input for the audio tracks, but it doesn't work, I get no sound from the audio tracks.

If I do the same thing with another vsti instrument (jamstix 3) it works fine. I wonder what the problem may be, I must be doing something wrong?

when using kontakkt as a vsti as opposed to using it as standaloone, it may be better to use multiple instances of it- i.e. one instance of kontakt for each instrument you want to load.
ii do it this way just bbecause im new to kontakt and dont fully understand it yet.

just something to consider.

Thanks, but I've figured out how to use effects without routing the output to an audio track, I didn't know it was possible. Great!

Due to low screen resolution, I didn't see the "effect" zone on the right, which allows you to apply effects to any channel.

Your idea is good, but I wonder if more than one instance of Kontakt wouldn't utilize even more memory.

When you insert Kontakt insert it using the Inset menu - you will have options, Kontakt 8-out, Kontakt 16-out and Kontakt (which I think is 32 out) This dets the number of available output tracks for that instance of Kontakt.

Important - Do not insert as a simple instrument track
Important - check the box in the "Insert Soft Synth Options" dialogue that says All Synth Audio Outputs:stereo

Setting up Kontakt's internal routings is a bit of a black art, so check the manuals, but you should now be able assign each instrument in Kontakt to its own output channel in Sonar.

You still have to set the number output for each instrument inside Kontakt!, no matters Kontakt  have 4, 8, 16 outputs tarcks in Sonar. You can in Kontakt set the desired MIDI channel input and the desired Audio Output port number for each patch, also there is no real need to use external effects in Sonar for Kontakt, since the plugin have lots of great insert and send FX at glance

Thanks, I'll try to insert it through the menu.

@carlosagm79: yes I had chosen an audio port number for each patch if I remember correctly, but there was no sound. Gonna try it again following Glyn's instructions too.

EDIT: I've inserted kontakt as suggested, chosen All synth audio outputs stereo, but I can't import any midi file into the tracks, so how does this work? It's no use to me if I can't play midi files with these tracks.

OK... so... don't insert an instance of Kontakt for each instrument, you will waste resources.  Also, I don't recommend inserting more Kontakt outputs then you will need when inserting the Kontakt synth in Sonar.  All of the unused AUDIO tracks that will be inserted into X1 also take up CPU resources even if you don't use them.

So, insert Kontakt using one audio output.  X1 will create a folder with one audio track.  Go to your MIDI track and route its output to this Kontakt midi port and channel 1.

Now lets go to Kontakt.  Make sure your instrument in Kontakt is routing to the ONE output track in Kontakt (should be done by default).  Make sure your MIDI track is sending its MIDI channel and track to Kontakt and make sure that the Kontakt instrument matches the midi channel of your MIDI track (inside Kontakt).

This should give you one instrument working in X1. Now you can add whatever effects plugins to the X1 Kontakt audio track or the OUTPUT ONE track inside of Kontakt (if you want to use the Kontakt effects).

So, lets add another instrument.  Go to the Kontakt instrument folder in X1 track view and insert another audio track.  Set it's input to be the KONTAKTS instruments second output stereo pairs.

Then go to Kontakt and click on the second output fader and set its output to be Kontakt 3 and 4 outputs (which will be a stereo pair of the output 2 that you connected in the audio track in x1).

Now insert another instrument in Kontakt and routes its output to #2 in Kontakt and give it a unique MIDI channel number.  Now, insert a new MIDI track and set its output to the Kontakt MIDI out port and the MIDI channel you set in Kontakt for instrument 2.

Now you will have 2 instruments on two different MIDI channels with two unique X1 audio tracks to process at will.

Continue this for as many Kontakt instruments you need (max of 16).

I know it sounds complicated but it really isn't too hard to grasp once you make your first connection for a second instrument.

Hope that helped.

Now you should go make yourself a track template!

Set up an empty instance of Kontakt - either with 1 output or a few outputs (whatever you like). Then set up a few MIDI empty tracks and set them for the right channels. Put them all in a track folder - and save it as a track template.

Now every time you want to use Kontakt - just add the track template.

Before you go investing a lot of time in finalizing a template, you might want to take a look at this topic:

I ended up switching to Simple Instrument tracks and prefer that.
