Problem with "drift"

I am running Sonar Producer 8.5 and I have had this problem on 2 different laptops. I am able to record some tracks, but after awhile, my vocals have little clicks and pops in them and they start to speed up. It seems to me that it is recording "on-time" but when it pops up with busy on the track its off track. Can anybody tell me why this is happening?!?!?! Very, very frustrating and I would love ANY help at all. I was thinking it could be the soundcard, but I don't really have a clue. I use M-Audio Fast Track and my laptop is an HP G61 AMD Athlon II Dual-Core M320 2.10GHz, 3 GB RAM

What driver mode are you using in Sonar under Options/Audio/Advanced tab? I suggest using ASIO. Then make sure the correct drivers are selected for the M-Audio under Options/Audio/Drivers tab. You should be able to set the ASIO buffers through M-Audio control panel. Smaller buffer means lower latency but can lead to audio dropouts and clicks and pops. Higher buffer settings have increased latency but are easier on the CPU.

Also, does the M-Audio connect via firewire or usb? Most motherboard manufactures use firewire chips that don't follow the IEEE specification and therefore can lead to issues. On a desktop, you can easily add a TI chipset firewire controller which would remedy the problem. On a laptop I'm not really sure.

make sure you're not using your onboard soundcard for output (or anything else) at the same time you're using the fast track.  as WDI says using ASIO will force this and that will eliminate "drift" if you've been using both soundcards.
