Problem with low output on Alesis Nanoverb

I strongly suspect something is wrong with the output level on an Alesis Nanoverb. Even with the input set just a hair under clipping and the output at full throttle, I get low output gain, never comes anywhere near full scale. The sound that's there is good but I think something is crippled.

I tried using it in the insert jack of my preamp and it's still low. If memory serves, I had issues with it years ago but then got into using software reverb and never really delved into the problem further. I'd like to try using it again and wondering if there's a relatively simply fix for this.

Anyone have similar issues with this unit and fixed it or think they know what the problem is anyway? I don't mind brandishing a soldering iron. Yeah, I could get another one but want to see if I can fix this one. Thanks.

Just to rule it out, if you're using a mono signal you're using the left input, yes?

Yes. TRS end into the insert jack on the pre, Tip lead into the left input jack on the Nano, Ring lead into the left output jack on the Nano.

I had one of those years ago.  From what I remember the output is "instrument level".  Are you running the outputs to a low level input or to a Line Level input?

It's probably dying. I had one years ago along with a MicroVerb. Both eventually failed. They didn't build those things to last. Cheap components inside doomed to fail after "X" hours of use.

Going to the line-in of my MAudio 2496 sound card.

So, the Nanoverb is inserted into your external preamp and the preamp is going into your soundcard? Have you used other devices with your preamp to make sure the problem isn't with it? What preamp is it?

Studio Projects VTB-1.  Haven't used other devices in the insert jack, the preamp works fine otherwise. I have the same problem with the Nanoverb going from the Pre output to the in of the Nano, then going from the out of the Nano. Thought I'd try it as an insert and see what happened. I don't think it's the preamp circuitry that's the problem.
