Problem with new HP PC's onboard audio

This is a Sonar 8 (8.3.1) Studio Edition question...

A catastrophic failure has forced me to replace my old PC (a Compaq Presario with a dual-core processor and running XP), with a new PC (an HP Pavilion with a quad core processor running Windows 7).  I have and old M-Audio PCI card and a Mackie firewire interface, and neither will work with my new computer because it has no PCI slot for the M-Audio card and the Mackie keeps blowing up for some reason I haven't researched yet.

So, I am forced for the time being to use the audio that came built in with the computer.  Everything seems to run OK for a while, but then all of a sudden the sound gets really distorted.  It's hard to describe the kind of distortion.  I think it might be ailiasing?  I'm hearing what sound like harmonics that are out of tune with the the pitches you're supposed to be hearing.

The problem occurs with both audio tracks and MIDI tracks, it can happen during playback of recorded or sequenced tracks, or during live real-time performace of MIDI instruments.  It doesn't seem to matter if the default bit depth is 16 or 24 bits and it doesn't seem to be connected with high CPU usage.  I have only experienced this problem when using Sonar.  Normal audio and video playback seem to be fine.

The PC advertises the "Beats Audio" system (whatever that is).   In the Device Manager the audio driver shows up as "IDT High Definition Audio Codec".  I have downloaded and installed all of the latest drivers, updates and patches that I could find, including the Sonar patch 831.  I am running Sonar Studio Edition at 32 bits beacuse of some other compatibility issues with old plug-ins.

If that's enough to go on, I'd truly appreciate any help or advice y'all can give.

Regards,
Slim

Have you tried different driver modes? What is your latency set at?
Most integrated chips don't understand ASIO drivers, but WDM or ASIO4ALL (free DL) might work, even though they mostly like MME32, which is the poorest option..

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.

Well DUH! I've only been using Cakewalk for 10 years, you'd think the latency would be the first thing I checked. I thought it was already up pretty high because I had it cranked up to an annoying level when I was troubleshooting the Mackie. But when I checked the slider was all the way down to the lowest level. I guess it got reset when I ran the wave profiler for the board driver -- or I reset it and forgot.

Anyway, I increased the latency just a tad and I've been practicing piano all day without a crash, hopefully that solved the problem. I Haven't loaded up any big hairy projects (too busy practicing) but I'm pretty confident that was the issue.

Thanks so much for your help.

You're most welcome!
It's such a relief when the problem is smaller than you expected, isn't it! I'm a pessimist, so I'm seldom disappointed, but easily delighted.
