Problems with GPO 4

I was working on a project and had set up some Midi tracks using the Cakewalk Soft synth. I then inserted GPO 4  and couldn't get any sound out of the Aria player. The keyboard in the Aria player sounded but when I tried to use the midi track assigned to the Aria player I couldn't get any sound. Also in experimenting with GPO 4 I think Sonar X1 has crashed a few times. Does anyone else experience problems with Sonar X1 and GPO.

    Hello, RMA - I don't know what yo mean by "the Cakewalk Soft Synth"--?--but I've used GPO with Sonar for a long time. It even works in X1. What you need to do is take a good look through GPO's manual, because there are many things about it that are unique--as in, it's controlled in a different way from any other soft synth. MIDI Controller #1 (usually used for vibrato modulation) controls GPO's volume. You must use CC1 to get the volume up to where you can hear anything. It's best to record CC1 with your mod wheel in a continuous way, but you could also just insert some CC1 data in Sonar's Piano Roll View. Also, go to your Project settings and UN-check "Zero controllers"-- otherwise, that volume control will always return to zero (no sound) when you stop playback of your project. RB

    Works fine here with X1c.
    I just got used to putting a cc#1 value of 64 at the beginning of each GPO assigned track to at least get an initial volume then either mod wheel while recording or drawing the values in the controller lane  of the piano roll view.

    Right on, Fred - Recording (or drawing--a pale second best) CC1 value for each GPO track is essential.   Part of the theory behind GPO's unusual programming was that it really forces users to use CC1, and once they do, they can discover The main ingredient in making the samples come too life.


    A recording with GPO that doesn't have constantly fluctuating volume data drastically reduces the naturalness of the instruments, since the real life counterparts, violins, trumpets, woodwinds et al vary in volume dramatically when played by good musicians.  GPO helps emulate that sound with CC1.

    Essential in Sonar, though, under preferences, is to un-check that "Zero controllers when play stops" option.  Once that's un-checked, you don't even need to insert any initial CC1 value - Just move Aria's virtual mod wheel up to the top and start recording.
