Problems with sustains and VSTs

I'm using Synthogy Ivory VST's, and in Sonar they sound perfect. But when I convert them to a .wav file, and/or especially an .mp3 file, the sustains get cut off. It literally sounds like someone took the note and just cut it off. I've been hunting around Sonar trying to find out the answer to why it is doing this, but no luck.

Anyone have any ideas? To hear what I'm referring to, listen to my song. In particular, it is most obvious at the very end of the piece, but if you listen carefully throughout you can even hear little "clicks" or "scratches/noises" that appear whenever a sustain is broken.

Song

Thanks in advance,
Jennifer

Not sure how to fix the sustain problem in the middle of the song... Have you updated to 5.2 yet? Cakewalk apparently did quite a bit of work on the VST engine, that might help.

As for the end of the song, make sure that you allow some dead space after the last note to allow for the tail of the note to decay fully. Otherwise it will be cut off.

Select the track(s) you want to export (CTRL-A for all.) Then holding down CTRL and clicking further out on the time/bar meter at the top of the main view (make sure the cursor stays an arrow or it will try to add a marker.)

Then hit ALT- F - E - A (File--> Export--> Audio) and pick your settings. Now when you export, the tail of your last note won't be cut off.

    Peace,

Has this problem been fixed or is there a workaround, I'm noticing this exact issue myself. I recently tried to render a jazz piece in which the sustain is absolutely vital and get this noticeable chop in the middle of each sample - this happens regardless of render mode (mp3/wav etc).

I would say this is quite a serious bug. Along with the current bug whereby when you export audio/midi Sonar is not picking up the beginning of the song correctly and forgets to export the first few notes!

My solution to this is to use the TenCrazy SustainFix MFX plug-in on all of my MIDI tracks that require sustain. It does away with inconsistencies between the live playback and Bounce/Freeze/Export[Render] results.

It basically eliminates the CC64 events and modifies (i.e. lengthens) the note durations to reflect the CC64 events. You have to APPLY MIDI EFFECTS from the Process menu before this happens.

I prefer this anyway, as it's much easier to edit MIDI notes that are as long VISUALLY as they are SONICALLY. I get frustrated trying to figure out what notes are being sustained by what CC64 messages and for how long and all that. It's much simpler to just convert the CC64 events into notes of the proper length with the SustainFix plug-in. Granted It's not as easy to modify pedal-down/pedal-up timing after the fact. But I find I rarely change pedal up/down timing drastically anyway. It's much easier to fine tune the exact layering and timing of notes when you can really see how long they are and when they cut off -- all in one screen (the Piano Roll).

Thanks for the response Infinite5ths, I tried the TenCrazy plug but unfortunately that did not fix the problem altho a very interesting plug I will probably use for other stuff in future!

Apparently this particular issue is being caused by Ivory itself and is fixed in the 1.52 update:

    1) downloaded the 1.52 update
    2) Ran the installer specifying my VST directory (the new ivory.dll gets copied to Program Files\Vst Plugins regardless apparently!!)
    3) Copied the new Ivory.dll to my real VST plugins directory. (loading it in Sonar should now show v1.52)

this solved the problem for me.. the thread with more details is ...

Now just to solve the general problem of the start of tracks being cut off on export!!
