That's probably a result of not using the right set-up..
Let me guess... You are using a on-board sound card and want to use the standard GS set?

That's definitely not the way to go. I advise to get a proper sound card and don't use a on-board card, because the quality of those cards are really not sufficient for demanding audio applications..

If you really insist of using a on-board card, then try at least to install ASIO4ALL to get some better sound out of it.

Now - for the Microsoft GS WaveTable. If you want to use a GS Wavetable setup, you better use a soft-synth like TTS1. This synth has the standard GS set and the only thing you have to do is output the MIDI track to the synth, and the synth output to your sound card. You can use the starter lessons in the manual to see how that is done...

But, when we install SONAR, he must find the MIDI Device. He don't.
I haven't the menu "Options" to configure Midi device
    it's normal with SONAR X1 ?

Well - the midi Microsoft GS WaveTable is in the strict sense no MIDI device at all. It is in fact an MIDI converter. It is present only to "convert" raw MIDI files to sound. It works, but only when you are using something like DirectX drivers (not sure about that driver, because I never tried to do something like that).

When using ASIO drivers that "MIDI" device is not found as far as I know. The only MIDI devices that are useful in sonar are physical devices like a keyboard (non-qwerty if you know what I mean), contollers, MIDI interfaces etc. If you do not see anything in the set-up, chances are big you do not have a physical device...

There are ways around this. It is cumbersome, but it works. Try to find a software MIDI keyboard emulator. This program let you use your qwerty keyboard to input MIDI notes. There are also virtual keyboards that you can click with your mouse. Most of this software can let you do both. As I said - it is only a stop-gap, because this programs cannot sense things your qwerty keyboard does not has (like velocity, aftertouch etc.).

I do not want to sound harsh, but I think it is a good idea to take some readings about what MIDI is, and how to use it. Just use Google, and I am sure you will find something. Also - carefully read the first pages of the user manual, explaining the basics of MIDI and MIDI devices..

I'm using Sonar 8.5.3 and the Microsoft Wavetable device shows up as my Midi Output Device. I don't use it, but it's there.

    You are absolutely right...

I was not in the neighbourhood of my "music" computer, so I could not check that out. That will teach me to always check things out before only using that old rusty brain of me...

The GS Wavetable does not show up in X1 here. I'm using Win 7 home premium. It is really not up to the task of handling Sonar. If you're using only the PC as a soundcard-interface, you're limiting your usability of Sonar. Get an interface and ditch the onboard PC soundcard.
Usually you will not need a Midi out device to get sound out of Sonars Soft Synths. Depending on what you are using as Midi in device, you can drive the same device with recorded Midi and use it's audio outs back into Sonar. You're going to have to give some specifics about what you're using.
