Pro-built Recording Computer Companies / Sonar
My old recording computer is all but dead after 5 years of service and it is time for me to get a new machine. I do not have time to build a new one, nor the patience, lol, so I am looking into companies that pro manufacture recording PCs. I'll be recording MOTU 896s into Sonar, generally recording no more than 8 tracks at a time, and will need to mix no more than 30. I would also like the ability to edit some video on this machine. Budget is 1500 top end. Anyone here gone this route? Suggestions? Recommendations? Horror stories? Advice? Thanks!

One of the regulars on these forums is Jim Rosenberry. He builds DAWs. Everyone I've known or seen who has purchased from him has been extremely satisfied. He's also an extremely helpful contributor here. Look for his posts, and I'd recommend discussing this with him.

Jim's website is: http://www.studiocat.com/ Everything Billy said is true. I have dealt with Jim. Both through a purchase and here on the forum. Stand-up guy. My music PC that I have today is built from advice Jim gave on this forum. Sweetwater has a line of PC's. And I forget CW also has links on their site to dealers. Since I've only purchased 1 music PC (and that was from Jim), and built several others, Jim is the only one I can recommend. I will buy from him again.

I highly recommend Jim Roseberry, as well. Jim has built several systems for either myself or friends/associates of mine. He has a very special laptop quoted for me right now and is waiting on me to act on it. ;-) You won't be disappointed with Jim's work or his service/support.

Another positive recommendation for Jim Rosenberry http://www.studiocat.com/. I'd built my own workstations prior to my last one (that I ordered from Jim) and his communication and support are top-notch.

Twigman agreatheight I do not have time to build a new one, nor the patience, 4 hours or so work and you don't have the time??????? My you must be busy. Even less if he takes a part list to a local computer place. And considerably cheaper (like by $700-$1000 or more). And it can be the exact same parts, so basically the exact same thing. Besides, for what he stated his needs are, a custom build is way overkill. Any machine in the last 7 years ( or more) can do what he wants. But to each their own. If i was dead set on a custom, I'd go with pc audio labs. http://www.pcaudiolabs.com/

However, I guess taking the spec from a website cuts this down - what it doesn't get you is any support. If you build your own, you effectively become technical support.

Being curious...no one has mentioned ADK yet ( http://www.adkproaudio.com/) (that is...except for the fact that they are included on Cake's DAW page). Anyone with direct experience?

4 hours or so work and you don't have the time??????? It never took me four hours to assemble a box. But is has always taken a great deal longer than that to figure out what to put inside.

I have two computers built by Jim Roseberry and two computers built by ADK. All four are great performers. 3 of them are rackmounted and one is a tower. I would buy from either of them again with no qualms, and both provide excellent support and service. I will mention that Jim Roseberry was including some drum samples and IRs that he made himself as part of the deal. I didn't think much about them at the time, but afterward recognized that they are a nice added value. I don't know if he still includes them, but I do use them, especially the reverb impulses fairly often. Scott at ADK swung me a nice deal on a UAD-2 card, installed and activated it, and setup a dual boot (32 and 64bit)system for me. His associates (I must mention Eric who walked me through the installation of a network bridge) have been very helpful. You can't go wrong either way. Good luck, Paul

I got my last DAW from Jim at Studio Cat. Scott at ADK is very helpful here at the forum as well. I've never seen anyone from PC Audio labs helping folks here at the forum... and their pricing seems to be the highest. I would never let a "local guy" touch my computer. Most local guys make their bucks helping the doctors and lawyers in town run their small business networks... even if they present themselves as a gamer's speed shop. They always take the easy way out and could care less about your specific DAW requirements. I always recommend building your own desktop. When you do that enough that it bores you to death... you can't get Jim or Scott to build you a latest greatest DAW while you make music. best regards, mike

I bought an i7 computer from Jim Roseberry a year and a half ago and it runs flawlessly. In addition, Jim gave me great advice in getting my system up and running and working with him was an absolute pleasure.
