Processing Speed Computer Advice

I'm a bit of a newbee to recording.  Need some really basic advice. 
I have Sonar x1 Studio.  A Cakewalk audio interface.  An Maudio Oxygen 25 usb midi controller.
I record generally one track at a time - maybe 2 on occasion.  I'd probably never end up with more than 8 to 10 tracks total and that would be running minimal effects and instruments.  I'm OK about spending the money for a new computer, but I don't want to end up buying way more than I need - or worse, less.
My one passion is getting rid of the latency.  I'd like zero if that's attainable on a budget.  My current machine is a dog - I know that. I won't even tell you the specs - it's embarrassing.  It ran Sonar Home Studio - but just barely. 

In advance:  Sorry if this seems like a fatefully ignorant post.  I'm a musician, not computer scientist. 

So does this machine look OK?

Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-760 quad-core processor [2.8GHz, 1MB L2 + 8MB shared L3 cache] 6GB DDR3-1333MHz SDRAM [3 DIMMs] from 4GB
    Or is this a safer bet?

    Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-870 quad-core processor [2.93GHz, 1MB L2 + 8MB shared L3 cache] 8GB DDR3-1333MHz SDRAM [4 DIMMs]
    Any general advice on processors and speed would be gratefully appreciated.

      Faster is always better. Its really a matter of how much you are willing to spend. Its as simple as that.

      Hello: most are building the i5's i wont get into to that any further
      the motherboard you select would realy be a key issue..jon

      Sounds like the i5 processor would be hefty enough for my needs?  Any advice on the mother board?

      unless i missd something in your post, you should be more than fine..and x-1a on a good system is very stable

      I would go for the I7 920. Its a very good buy. If you are building your own the MB is important too. I like the Gigabytes boards but others prefer something else.

      An I5 can do all that you are asking it to do.

      To a very great degree latency is not a matter for the CPU but the interface you choose. Its drivers will be the most important and determining factor for low latency audio. People had low latency with a Pentium CPU back when and older.

      sorry went afk: im comfortable with Johns  advice.if your
      going 920 shop the 950, think its the deal right now
      as for memory  http://www.kingston.com/canada/  has a
      program on right: input what ever motherboard and it will show you what memory to use, over voltage over
      clockd memory is a nono, in many cases.. we can talk more if need'd
