Producer X1c hangs when inserting soft synth

First post I think - so hello to all.

I've had X1 producer installed for sometime but have put off getting into it until I finished off some incomplete work done in 8.5 producer. But this last weekend I decided to bite the bullet.
Just to preface this - I am no midi or soft-synth ace. I can usually get them to work but have really only used Session Drummer. But I have to say I don't really understand soft synths or midi with any great depth.

I imported 12 tracks of raw unprocessed data recorded live. The Kik drum was fairly ugly so I thought I'd replace it.
When I go to load a soft synth, (Session Drummer 3) the software will hang with the windows message "Software not responding etc - do you want to send a report blah, blah".
It's OK in 8.5.

However if I untick the View Synth Rack box the software will not hang.
I tried inserting other soft synths, (e.g. Beatscape) and the same thing happened

I run the MX16DX and the Fa-101 together and I am not really sure what I should have assigned in the Midi Options box. The MX16Dx is my main output.

Any suggestions or help appreciated.
The music PC is not connected to the internet so if someone asks for screenshots etc to help me in nailing this down it may be a day or two before I can post them, so please bear with me if there is a delay in my responses.

Cheers,
DJ

This could be alot of things. Can you start a new project and use Session Drumer?

Well Ric I thought this was really a "new" project as I imported the *.wav files from scratch.
No plug-ins or anything from 8.5.
I tried using the processed 8.5 files in X1 but it kept crashing.
I started a new X1 project using the 16 track Audio template provided in the Start New Project options. I deleted the Metronome.
The source files each contain about 1 hour of music, which was recorded using 8.5.
I set up a basic template with busses, panning, levels, some EQ using pro channel etc.
But there is not a lot going on at this stage re plug-ins etc. It's very basic.
I saved the project as SET.cwp and then deleted all material apart from the first song, which I then saved as SHUFFLE.cwp.
    That's the background.

I'm at my day job now and the music PC is at my home so I'll try your suggestion tonight after work. Life permitting....

As I don't have the PC in front of me can you suggest which template I should try from the Start New Project dialogue box?

Also - I'm in Australia so with time zones etc there may be a perceived delay in my responses, but I thank you for your input.

    Cheers,
    DJ

Ok - I started a new project from the "normal" template provided and eveything works. I can check the "soft synth rack" option and split all the drums to individual channels and everything works as it should.

    1. Any clues as to where I would look to troubleshoot my problem with my "shuffle.cwp" project?

    2. I'm assuming here that my audio and midi settings are global and are not set from project to project. I this correct?

    3. I suppose I could start from scratch, but I spent some time on setting up the original Set.cwp settings and I'd like to start from there. Yes - I understand I could make a note of these and start again but I don't think I should have to. OR - is this just part and paecel of using Sonar X1 and the answer is "start again - sorry buddy - that's the way it is."

For starters, the project you're trying to wok on with audio files is huge (1 hour each per track). I would hazard a guess that you've maxed out your RAM, your specs indicate 2 gigs under XP 32.

First, I'm not an expert by any means but I do know that it can be a problem having all the differnt versions of sonar on the same computer. But I do too because of the obvious risks involved with upgrading.

    -emwhy might be right

-try this, Make a copy of the project in 8.5 and save it and all the audio data to a removable device or cdrom. Open up X1 and try to import the project. This worked for me on a 35min 2 track audio file.

Multiple versions of Sonar should not cause any problems.

I've had multiple versions of SONAR on my machines in the past, it's not an issue, at least never has been for me. Yes your audio/MIDI settings are global. I'm still leaning toward not enough RAM, but I should qualify by saying I to am not an expert.

Ric, I have tried importing the project from 8.5 but X1 kept crashing.
or am I misunderstanding what you are suggesting?

The ram issue had crossed my mind. One of the main reasons I upgraded to X1 was that I thought it was reportedly less CPU/Ram hungry than 8.5. and it runs OK on 8.5, generally around 75% > 85% CPU usage according to the metering in 8.5. That of course doesn't mean I'm correct.

So I think my next step will be to decrease the size of the original source files.

How do I actually achieve that?
What methodology do I use as far as file management etc so that Song#1.cwp only has the *.wav files of the relevant duration and not the full 1 hour?

Sorry if it's a simplistic question but I haven't had to operate Sonar in that way before. I've always left the source files at their original duration and cut out the individual songs and saved them as Song#1.cwp, Song #2.cwp etc. in the same folder These files use the original duration *.wav files as the Audio source.
Thanks for confirming my thoughts on the settings there emwhy, and thanks to you all for your input.

I have a feeling with all your help that we'll find my issue here, or at least find a workaround.
BTW - I'm finding the "Skylight" philosophy quite intimidating/annoying after 8.5 where I knew where most things were. BUT... I can see the advantages if I can get my head around it. So I'll persevere.

    Cheers,
    DJ

My suggestion (and is just what I've had work for me). Is to take the source file load it into 8.5, then export it to a removable media device (thumb drive, cdrom). Load x1c and import the audio from the device that you exported it to.

Decreasing the size of the orginal source files by opening the project in 8.5 and manually scrub (cut) the part you dont need or split the tracks into more managable sizes (take 10 mins at a time, Save as a differnet name....). Hope that helps. Ric

Sorry Ric - I'm a bit of a birdbutt and don't exactly understand what you are saying here.

Can you  put your suggestion in order of operation as if you were explaining it to a simpleton. - I'm a little confused by the jump from 8.5 to X1c and back....

A mate popinted out a thread here :

    [link=http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=44724&high=permanently+trim+audio]http://forum.cakewalk.com...permanently+trim+audio[/link]

But I don't know if this was resolved, it also starts in Sonar 3.
    What do you posters think?

I have another small problem in that I doubt I will be able to try any of your suggestions for a few days so I can't give any feedback at the moment... so please don't think I'm ignoring your suggestions.

    Cheers,

Have you been able to try any new projects in X1c?  Try recording or importing anothe project. let me know what happens. But I like u were a little overwhelmed with the new interface. But it is really better once u get use to it.

Ok - the problem has been resolved. It looks like the source wave files were in fact too large. After reducing the wave files to one song instead of a 45 minute set i was able to insert the synth with the synth rack view with no problems.
Thank you all for your input.
