Producer X3d Soft Synth Instrument names disappeared

I use soundfonts sometimes, there have been no real issues until I installed X3d Producer side-by-side with X1. In the midi tracks assigned to a soft synth there is a drop down that should show a number and an instrument name. On a drum synth there would be something like "2 Standard Kit" and "23 Room kit" "46 Jazz kit", just as examples of what you'd see. On a GM type of instrument the same place in the midi track would drop down to "1 Grand Piano", "2 Bright Piano", "10 Hapsichord" etc.
 
Those names were there and working fine in X1 but installing X3d has destroyed them, for X3d AND X1, so installing X3d bust the mapping (?) in X1. All I see now is "Multi nn" where "nn" is a number. I don't recall ever doing anything explicit to make this all work - it just worked straight out of the box and now it's gone. Any ideas?
