Producer's signature sound...

I just put Rainbow Rising on, an album I'm not all that familiar with, though I've heard it a couple of times. I knew nothing about the credits.

The minute the band started to play, I swear I could see the name Martin Birch in front of my eyes - whom I know mostly for his work with Iron Maiden - more so than with Purple, though in this case, I definitely heard the Come Taste the Band type of sound.

I'm trying to think of recognizable (pop/rock) producers... Mutt Lange comes to mind.

    Jeff Lynne, Trevor Horn, Martin Rushent...all very distinctive. Always thought it was a shame Genesis didn't do more with Trevor Horn producing, I thought this was outstanding;

    ... Martin Rushent...

    He (quite literally) produced the 'classic' Stranglers sound on their first three studio albums.

    Yes.  The one who puts his pants on one leg at a time like the rest of us but, when he does, he makes gold records.

    Jeff Lynne was the first name that popped into my head. I once listened to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Greatest Hits compilation multiple times on a road trip and noted how easy it was to pick out the Lynne productions.
