Professional Mastering for $20 per Song - and the first song's FREE!

I got a kick out of this video, which convincingly shows how mastering "improves the sound quality of your music enormously and makes it comparable to other comercially (sic) releasrd (sic) CD's (sic)".

And for only twenty bucks a song!

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

    Hi,

I think I would rather give Bapu my 20 bux ... or one of you guys in the CHB ... though I'm not sure they want me anymore even as a groupie!

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!

And in some cases, it should be turned all the way down.

I learned that mastering is about taking a 1" waveform and turning it into a 3" solid waveform.

It's also better if you use 3" diameter knobs.

I'd watch this video but my download limit is almost all gone.  i think you guys are making fun of this guy from the tone of the comments.  Look watch this space, I'm hopeful of getting an Avalon compressor by the end of the year.  To do mastering.  Whilst I love Sonar i do believe in 2nd harmonic distortion.
I'm giving nothing away anymore, the last time i said I'd do some drum tutorials two days latter Seth and Brandon trumped me and of course it was my comment about how to get realistic cellos sounds that started the orchestral shootout.  So no more i will help with technical stuff.  But your getting no more of my ideas.

I believe you can remove the 'skin' from a fart if you wanted to, so what has that got to do with, mastering and where does it even relate to Sonar?

    You are joking of course?

Unless I'm mistaken and the universe does indeed have its central axis based within your good self, it looks to me like you have a seeming tendency to run away with yourself a tad there.  There are some brilliantly intelligent, talented and well-informed people on this forum that I would venture the only thing you'll be depriving anybody of is yet another 'prize one' to belly laugh at.

No matter though there is no shortage of candidates regularly passing through these pages...

Look I thought we had got past all this.  2nd harmonic distortion is what happens as audio passes through a tube. 3rd harmonic distortion is what happens when it passes through a transistor.  Look i have notes and articles if you want a small essay on this topic.  I was just saying that when you master it's nice to run the whole track through a few tubes because it puts harmonic distortion upon the finished program material.  Look every sound is made up of harmonic fundamentals, so not only do you hear a guitar note when it is played at 440 hz (A) above  that are 2nd and third harmonics and more that make the actual note.  without the extra harmonics that exist in that note the note and all notes would sound the same. No matter where or how you play them. I thought everybody was having a go at the op.  I wont give anything more away until my website is running in a couple of months.  I thinks that's fair.

Finally i have a cheapish tube compressor at the moment the ART pro VLA II i highly recommend it.  You can hear the difference and feel the difference when program material is passed through it and when program material is not passed through it.

I know something about 2nd harmonic distortion, in that it is pretty much irrelevant to music production. You cannot plan how an individual perceives it in any case even if you could calculate effectively how much to enhance or reduce it there is no 'right' amount, as even different instruments themselves too produce different harmonic characteristics, given the same model of guitar even the harmonics produced will vary one from another, not only that some ears are more sensitive to different harmonics than they are others.

Just like the tube compressor you cite above you may think it is the greatest but to someone else it may well be poison to their ears.  Top music makers throughout time have rarely bothered about the importance of these things.  You revere the Beatles I gather, so how much time do you think any of those guys spent prevaricating over this stuff?  Conversely how much of this introspective kind of science has consistently been able to produce a number one record or regularly gotten the girls onto the dance floor?  And to be clear all you are talking about here is commonly known to any hobbiest producer upwards as saturation, no big deal.

You can post-analyze all sorts of stuff that has been proven to capture the popular imagination but we're still a long way off from being able to predict that which causes a phenomenon like the Beatles to happen and when we do I'll wager that 2nd harmonic distortion is very unlikely to play much of a part.

So you can say look this, look that, all you like and talk like you are the only person that knows squat about diddly if you want, thanks all the same but I've go my own album to do.

OK guys what is the problem, i thought that you were taking the micky out of the op.  I did not join in but made some constructive points about mastering and tube compressors.  I did not say that my compressor was the best and in fact i am looking at Avalon at the end of the year.  and i am not saying that this is the best.

I gave some facts about tube compressors and VCA compressors and what they do to source material, nothing more and nothing less.  It can be heard and if i said to a punter listen to these two tracks one with tube compression or 2nd harmonic distortion and one without i would wager they would know the difference.  whether they cared is another question.

I have said on many occasions i am happy to be judged on my music and my woman's music, it doesn't matter if you sell a million or nothing at all.  Great music is great music.  Is that a subjective thing YES.  But because most of the human race behave and are quiet content to be sheep.  It is easy to manipulate the average mans opinion.  They a) like a bit of peace at the end of the day and b) tend not to care unless it hits them in the hip pocket.

The point to this is the truth, what we like and what we want is not our decision, it is foisted upon us.  Those who do not have the above problem, that is no mortgage and no family to worry about tend to have a better understanding of the truth and tend to have an opinion that has not been formed by the media at large.

If you want to attack me go for it, i have tried to be less negative, these last few weeks.  So attack away, as i say if you want to judge me judge my work.  I have said nothing negative in this conversation.  In fact i have offered a little knowledge that perhaps you knew, if that is case i am sorry.

Finally i am content in myself and my work, is it The Beatles no! but my music has been used on television and i have been paid for this.  So stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

As far as I can tell there was only me here taking issue with what you where saying and only then because of the way you were putting it across.  I wasn't trying to attack you either merely challenging whether what you were saying had a relevance.

There is no need for the "OK guys what is the problem", none of the rest of the 'guys' chipped in so you can address me directly in this case as it is likely me you have responded to here.

There was nothing wrong with what you were saying as far as I know, it was just the manner in which it came across to me that looked a little condescending.  Plenty of people know about using saturation to apply odd and/or even harmonics to digital audio it is not exactly the new revelation implied in your post, further it didn't really make any sense in the context you used it in.

I'm sure you have plenty of information and insights to contribute to the forums here but it is a turn off, certainly to me, when you talk down like you've happened upon some great revelation and that you are the only one equipped to explain it to us poor unenlightened folk.

Stating you are the cause of Seth and Brandons drum recording videos then initiating the Orchestral Shoot-out thread and you are going to with-hold further participation of sharing information because of that all sounds a bit ripe to me.

    Just sayin'

And what's all this talk about 2nd harmonics, anyway? Is this not the Coffee House? Here, "second harmonic" refers to the other guy in the band who thinks he can play the harmonica and insists on jumping in to help out the real harmonica player on his solos.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Not sure about that but there must be a fart gag to do with 2nd harmonics somewhere, but not a whiff of one anywhere.

    Yet!...

Although I notice Mooch nearly let one out...
