Proposed Bill making it an offence for people to wear military medals they didn't earn.

A Private Member's Bill making it offence for people to wear military medals to which they are not entitled is backed by the government.

The Awards for Valour (Protection) Bill tabled by Conservative MP Gareth Johnson passed its Commons second reading on Friday.
It could create a new criminal offence with a maximum penalty of six months' imprisonment or a £5,000 fine. Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon says he "fully supports" the proposal. The bill will undergo further scrutiny by MPs at committee stage at a later date. "Medals recognise our forces who risk their lives for freedom. It is important their service is properly protected," he said.

Well, I'm a (small r) republican myself, but to be fair Phil the Greek did see quite a lot of shooting during the Second World War, and did get a couple of decorations out of that.

Andrew was in the Falklands, and wosisname the helicopter pilot saw Afghanistan and actually does a useful search and rescue job. Not sure to what extent they earned any of those decorations or their ranks though.

As for the rest of the tasteless bling, lots of it is in "the personal gift of the monarch" and if you can't force your family to appear in public looking like a cheap Christmas tree ornament what's the point of being Queen?

The only medals I've ever worn were dinner medals. All down my front. And proud of them.

If they're going to wear medals they weren't awarded why aren't any of them sporting these?

They all need one of these.

But this is more likely.

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

Well all I can say is it certainly offends me!    !!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Luckily I've never met one but if I did I would SHIRLEY say a few things. I know what military personnel  must sacrifice for a few cheap trinkets on their chest while .....well let me just say....  ....I won't say here

Bill, you are one of the very best my friend. From past conversations, some of us are aware of your admirable contribution toward preserving the freedoms we enjoy. I thank you all, and in particular, consider it a privilege and an honour to know someone like you personally.

You're a modest guy who rarely if ever mentions your military career - a real hero in my eyes

As far as my little dig at the royals, I accept that a few of those medals that adorn their finery were actually earned. However, having spoken at length to a couple of squaddies, the general feeling is that they only have to turn up to address the troops to get another gong!

They also said that Harry was actually a liability in Afghanistan rather than the medal-earning hero the press were instructed to portray him as. The number of troops that were taken away from the campaign to ensure his personal safety was actually quite a drain on already stretched resources out there. But they did accept that as a piece of propaganda, it may have helped their cause overall.

Thank you so much Steve! Such kind words. As I have said before in the military I have been so fortunate to have met the most honorable professionals. I'm so proud of all armed forces personnel. I wish their integrity, honesty, bravery, and selflessness was a trait of the self serving &&$&#_@ that put them in harms way on a daily basis
