Ptl crashes to Desktop following mix down

Another issue to add to my list of Plt grievances.

I did 2 mix-downs of a song unchecking fast bounce. Following the 2nd successful mix-down, I tried to save the project and Plt crashed to the desktop - no messages of any kind - and as usual, dropped my Quad's drivers for it's system. Restarting Plt gets the usual 'drivers on the system' message, despite still visible and working in Windows.

I suppose again I'm the only one experiencing this?

I don't know what all you've already tried, but your description sounds like the audio drivers disconnecting. Sonar has never been able to gracefully handle unresponsive drivers. I suppose you've done the usual things, re-install the driver, use a usb 2 port not usb 3, check that usb selective disconnect isn't checked in power options. Roland has a firmware update for the quad-capture although I believe it's more for windows 8 compatibility but you might check on that. Hope you get it worked out.

Hi Steve...thanks. I have been in contact with Roland trying to sort out why Sonar keeps these drivers out. Yes to the UIB 2 and no to the selective disconnect usb power setting.

I'll have a look at the Win 8 quad driver and sus it out...thanks for that...I'll try anything at this point.

The fact that the drivers are stuck after a crash is not a SONAR bug. Most Roland drivers don't handle this scenario by releasing their instance when the calling application terminates. Most other audio interfaces tolerate a crash in the host application and release themselves. The workaround here is to unplug and replug the audio interface.
You should contact Roland support if you need that addressed since there is nothing the DAW can do to resolve it.

The fact that the Roland drivers hang is secondary to the issue of Sonar crashing in the first instance. I'm more interested in finding out why Plt keeps crashing. The workaround is something I've been doing for a year or so.

Roland assures me of their 'robust' drivers and has apparently been developed in consultation with Cakewalk. They have not provided a fix for this and ultimately, perhaps I should look to other more reliable audio interfaces.

I know it doesn't help you but, knock on wood, I've really never had any problems with the quad or sonar. I believe at one point in X2 sonar started crashing but just totally removing the quad driver and re-installing fixed the problem. There's also the Kontakt not playing nice with the quad's asio drivers. NI released an update recently but I still can't run Kontakt stand-alone using the asio drivers.

If it's driver related, the fact that the drivers stop communicating seems to be what causes sonar to hang/crash. Try going through all the basic troubleshooting steps. Try a different usb cable, try the usb ports on the back of the case or on the front, make sure the quad isn't overheating if you have it stacked with other equipment.

    Good luck....

PS: check for any motherboard bios updates relating to usb power issues.

The driver issue is unlikely to be related to your crash. We can't diagnose your crash without you contacting support and providing us a dump file for the crash. It could be any number of reasons for that including a plugin fault. We won't know until we see the dump file. Its not normal for SONAR to crash when saving so there is something getting corrupted most likely in your project. In any case please provide a crash dump file and we can investigate it further.

I had been using the audio interface in the V-Studio and experienced lots of crashing problems that as Noel points out, were not SONAR-related. The Octa-Capture did the same thing, but when I downloaded its most recent drivers and firmware, it worked much better. I assume the V-Studio audio interface will not be updated further although, I'm going to re-install its drivers and give it one more try soon.

Meanwhile, I tested the TASCAM US-4x4 interface when it first came out and really liked the preamps. So I started using that, and it's been super-reliable but then again, I knew it had been tested extensively with SONAR. I'm not saying by any means it's the only interface to use, I've tested a ton of interfaces over the years and some just seem to be more Windows-friendly than others.

I may just be lucky but Platinum has been unusually reliable for me. Still haven't had a crash or hang since installing the final version. I'm sure I'll figure out some way to break it, but haven't yet.

I have submitted a tech support request over a week ago...I have sent numerable dump files when Sonar crashes...sometimes there's a connection error.

Thanks Anderton...I'm tired of unplugging and plugging in the Roland...I re installed the drivers a couple of times now. I'll have a look at the Tascam...I've just about had enough of this.

If you have bug numbers for what you submitted please list them and I can take a look. Otherwise upload a minidump somewhere and PM me the link. If this is a recurring problem there is probably a very obvious cause.

    The minidump folder is %appdata%\Cakewalk\Minidumps
You can type that into file explorer to go there. Plugin crashes are stored inside the Plugins sub folder.
To find a dump first reproduce your crash and then look for the file with the newest date and time in that folder as well as the Plugins folder.

Hi Noel. I cut and paste - %appdata%\Cakewalk\Minidumps - and explorer could not find anything. However I did find a sonarpdr.exe dump in appdaa, local, crashdumps.

These crashes are random and sometimes don't create a dump file. It'll just crash to the desktop without any info. I re-install Roland drivers. Plt is slow to start up and highly unstable. X3 is a bit quicker to load but is unstable as well...don't know what has happened here.

I will try to upload the crash dump to you...the only one I've found so far.

Okay tried this in x3 and changed drivers to wdm...saved okay and sounding good. Project for track 10 hardly using any resources. Saved when closing...crashed to desktop.

Also, disabled maleware protection and real time protection as when installing Plt, can only do in safe mode. Caused blue screen with bdfsfltr identified - to do with iobit's bitdefender virus protection program...sent to iobit for support.

    Hello Fabio,

The minidump file you sent me reports that the crash is in Kontakt 5.
I have bolded the relevant information in the dump below. You have a lot of plugins and synths loaded so its hard to say if one of them is causing the problem but in this case the crash occured inside Kontakt 5.

Based on your general instability however there could be other causes of your problems. Especially if you are seeing problems on other project files that do not contain Kontakt 5. Try recording and doing similar operations in projects that do not contain Kontakt and see if you still have issues.

One thing you should eliminate is a memory problem or a hard disk problem. Both the above can cause very mysterious and random crashes. Do a memory test as well as some hard disk diagnostics.
I had a failing hard disk that would lead to blue screens and other random crashes in SONAR and other applications before I found out what it was.

    Okay thanks Noel

I'll keep pursuing this with NI and follow up with memory and HDD's diagnostics. I have another project in X3 that has K5 but not using the specific 'horns' module. Could be that particular module in K5 but it's hard to pinpoint.

Thanks for taking the time to have a look. I'll try another project in Plt without K5 and let you know if there are any issues.

If you get further crashes send me the dumps and I can look at them. If they all point to Kontakt then its likely to be an issue there. Especially if you are seeing similar crashes in SONAR X3.

Noel. I worked on a project today - no Kontact. Played okay, saved okay. Closed it. Plt seemed 'alive', now when I clicked on file to open a project, Plt just froze. No error message or anything. Just frozen. What would be the cause of this do you think?

Try opening in safe mode by holding the SHIFT key while opening the project. This will give you the opportunity to skip plug-ins while loading.

Music Creator is not supported by the Command Center. Download the product directly from https://www.cakewalk.com/My-Account/Products . In the future please post Music Creator questions in the Music Creator forum http://forum.cakewalk.com/Music-Creator-f71.aspx

I have a question I think I made a mistake! I bought the bundle pack I am new to this I paid I think like 159.99 and it is not in my command center is this because I am missing something? I thought I would be able to use it as soon as I bought that.

It's opening fine...and it closed done okay...but my question was in relation to Plt then freezing before I could open another project...can't hold down shift at this point.

Also, when I had X1,X2 on the sytem, X3 would open very slowly. When I un-installed X1 and 2, X3 sped up it's opening. However, I'm finding Plt is very slow to open.
