Purchasing SONAR for Interns

I would like my new intern to have SONAR on his own machine so he can get up to speed faster.  There is only so much time we can spend on learning the software while he is here (typically during sessions).

What would be the best way (other than full retail) of going about this?  When I sign onto the Cakewalk store it only offers me upgrades.  That's not going to work since he does not have a Cakewalk product on his machine.
Ideally, I'd own the license and either uninstall the software from his machine  if/when he moves on,  or he would have the option to purchase it.  I know this is currently not an option, but would be a great way for Cakewalk to find more users.

I have Producer, but would not want to have to purchase that for him ($$$).  Would he still get enough of the functionality with Essential?

Thanks!

Steven

Is he a student at some recognized institution by any chance ? Sonar offers a special price for students which is really attractive. Talk to some local Roland dealer about the options.

Good point!  He is indeed a student (taking an audio engineering course).

What Paul said but you might email/call the sales group directly. Also the Studio and Essential packages are very reasonably priced and offer most of the functionality of Sonar itself - no softsynths and IIRC no Pro Channel

Phooey.  Not much cheaper than just buying it from Sweetwater.

Also as an afterthought have you considered doing the 30 day trial? That would give the intern a fairly good periord to get up to speed. Just a thought.

    Regards,

    Actually...

You can download the trial which will give him 30 days full use.
After 30 days, he can then download the trial which will give him another 30 days.

So you end up with 60 days of free use without purchase.
You could then spend a little money on Sonar videos so he'll get up to speed really quickly.

Thanks, Mike.  That sounds like the best approach.

    doing the 30 day trial

If I do nothing else, yes, I should have them get the 30-day trial.
    Thanks again!

Well... it can be installed on multiple machines. I mean that's pushing the license agreement and perhaps breaking it but if it's your studio and he's doing your work that's kind of like having an extra machine affiliated with your studio.

Kind of a morality dilemma more than anything.

I think the multiple machines is one user - PC/DAW + laptop - kind of thing and not being used at the same time.
(as opposed to a studio being a ~user~ per se).

    Contact Cakewalk directly!

In the past - and it was a while ago - they were actually quite good about supporting educational efforts, even those that fell outside their educational discount. My impression is that it was done on a case by case basis, and while I didn't own the company<G>, I always thought it would be good to formalize it, but perhaps that would have limited their flexibility.

I'm old enough to remember when technology companies all but gave away their products to students. It still goes on, but on a much reduced scale. In those days it wasn't uncommon for a student to enter the workforce with clear biases towards - you guessed it - products with which they were familiar. Go figure!

It is absolutely worth the cost of an email.

PS - I've done the same thing with tools for theatrical production in the recent past. I think company size plays a role, but the developers I spoke with were pretty enthusiastic about getting their tools in front of students!
