I really liked this Scoob....great job man. The only thing I'd like to hear...is your drums always sound very studio in a lot of these recordings. That's not a bad thing...but if you could get a bit more atmosphere going on to liven things up so they aren't so studio sounding...I think it would really be cool. I mean I can tell it's live...but it almost sounds "live from a studio" if that makes sense? Like a board mix. Really liked this though...and it sounded pretty good on my rig here. A bit more kick drum would have been nice as I hear it more than feel it....but that's about it. Nicely done as usual brother. Thanks for sharing. :)

    Hey Tim,
this is really nice.  I have always loved this song.  say what you want about Prince or whatever he's called now, but he's very talented.  this version of the song is very good.  very close to the original.

the guitar panned all the way to the right espeically during the intro is bugging me...very much.  and I'm not hearing much of the drumsin the the left, so your panning is very odd, IMO.  I know this is a live recording, so I guess you did the best you could with what you had.  the vox are great, and fit fine in the mix and quite well done.

    thanks for sharing!

Tim, Really enjoyed this, pretty good live recording. The guitar is panned pretty far during the intro, I suppose you probably have your board set to separate the keyboard and guitar. Very nice performances. Regards

BTW - if you're taking this directly out of the mains to record, that's really probably the best you can do with panning for the recording, but if you're recording individual tracks from the board, you can easily do edits on the tracks to pan, for example the guitar center during the intro and change it to hard panned later during the song if you want.

I recently did several recordings of our band using direct outs from the FOH board and was able to do that very thing.  but coming directly from the mains you can't do anything about it.

Another fine live recording from you.  The performances are terrific.  The mix sounded good on my monitors and headphones.  I, for one, don't have a problem with the wide panning.  In fact, this used to be more common than it is today, and I feel many self-titled engineers prefer mixes to be too centered for my taste.  Of course, back in the analogue days, mixes were wider so phono needles wouldn't jump out of the tracks, but I still like a wide sound spectrum.  When  I'm listening to a mix in my car, I don't want all the sounds to come from my dashboard, rather, I like like to hear some things panned hard right and left with the meat and potatoes in the center (from 10 o'clock to 2 o'clock).  Very well done.

    All the best,
    Lynn

I know this is live and you probably want crits on the overall sound but the problem that sticks out for me is the vocals, the intonation is off in spots and hard to ignore for me

This is one of those all time classic 'sway with the lighter and cry about the chick you just broke up with' songs. It's hard to go wrong with it. You might be able to lose a little low end on the vocal and a bit of delay, I dunno?

Danny...........Thanks for your time,  Yeah I have a hard time with live drums for sure.
If only I could get more drummers to wear headphones (in-ear would be even better)  for their monitor mix.  Most drummers that I work with want their monitor blasting, so I have alot of bleed to deal with.   Gates only do so much and if I hit them real hard, well then the drums sound like ass.  :)       This was recorded outside, very large stage.   I'll see if I can get more punch out of the kick and try to make the drums sound more "Live".   Thanks again for your comments !

Reece............I appericate your time to comment,  The guitar in this mix was panned at 5.1 to the right,  I thought it might be alittle to wide.  But there is guitar in just about ever channel due from bleed.   Yeah your right on haveing control of panning.  I have 18 mono tracks to pan as I wish,
Not hearing any drums in the left, I don't know.  The RMS on the drums are equal on left and right.
Keys are on the left, maybe some EQ cuts will help.   The snare and kick are center and OH's are panned wide the same !    Not much tom action on the left side of kit.   Thanks again,  I'll check it out when I re-mix this.

Lynn.............Thanks Man, Glad you liked it.
    Markno999.......Thanks, glad you enjoyed .

Tony................Thanks, every comment is appericated.   I'll tell Robert he needs to get the intonation set on his vocal cords.

    Dean.............Thanks,  I'll check it out, but I was think'in I rolled off to much low's, dunno ?

    Thanks Again..........Tim

    Hey, Tim,

Another great job on a difficult live outdoor mix, and you really did it justice!  The band sounds very good, and you captured the song really well.

    Nice work, Tim, good stuff!

I have no experience at all of capturing a live sound, so I can't offer any words of wisdom, but it sounds very good. I agree with Danny re the drums. I would imagine that Prince is a hard guy to cover, unless you're Tony (twisted6s) who could prolly actually do it better than the purple one, so good job overall by band and sound guy !

    Scoobie,
Brother I know live sound can be a royal pain in the arse, if you you captured all that live and had that coming out of the mains too, you did a great job.   Could have used a bit more kick.  I like the panning myself.   Nice job dude!
