[Q] Need help decided between these two mics for my Nylon string guitar

Hey guys

I have a Nylon string Ibanez guitar...I think I paid $200 for it. The electronics in the guitar are not cutting the mustard. Lows seem to pick up too heavy while mid and hi frequencies are thin and low in tone. The guitar sounds much better played than it does recorded plugged in. This leads me to my question-

Which of the follow mics would be most suitable for recording my guitar? I don't want to break the bank on a mic at this point so I am on a budget. I've done a little research and come up with two options in my budget.

1. Shure SM57 Dynamic Mic

2. Sterling Audio ST51 Condenser Mic

I'm mainly concerned with recording my guitar at this point. The condenser mic isn't a necessity UNLESS it's the best option out of the two mics here.

Thanks

Windows 7 64-bit, i7 2.93 GHz, EP45-DS3R Mother Board 2GB ram, 2 sata 500GB drives, M-Audio ProFire 610, Sonar 8PE, Alpha Track, Mpc 2500

    It would take a very expensive preamp to make the SM57 work, you really need a condensor to get the gain and detail you need.

    If your budgit can stretch you could get a SE Ribbon R1

    I recently bought one and have tryed it on Guitar cabs and its awesome Vocals were awesome aswell and I was blowen away when I tryed it on 3 of my accoustics
    A Norman , a Martin oocx1ae and my baby that is a Martin DC15e Fantastic results on all of them with this mic !

    It needs a realy high gain but really is fantastic. very warm and clear sounding

    It would be well worth checking out if your buget can stretch to it I got a deal on one for £150

    @ohhey

    I did a little further research and I understand exactly what your getting at ....the SM57 is not suited for mic'ing an acoustic guitar. It's more suited to mic toms, snare drums, guitar cabinets...apparently it's meant to be driver hard. As  I'm sure you can tell I'm just getting into the mic-ing instruments...with a little help from you guys here and other sources I managed to pick up a very nice sounding entry level condenser. After talking with the guys at Guitar Center they recommended the Sterling Audio ST55. I got it home, set it up and I'm in love....it sounds 10000% better than recording my
    acoustic guitar via it's built in mic.

    @Norrie

    I just checked out the SE Ribbon R1.....looks amazing! Would you do me a pleasure? I'd love to hear a taste of the SE Ribbon R1 recording one of your acoustic guitars!  Any chance I could get you to record a little 4 bar section with no EQ or effects,...simply dry? I'd love to hear.

    Thanks guys for the info and help

    Thanks for the help guys

    Hi Bryce, for what it's worth, I use a Behringer B-5 condensor mic in combination with the pickup on my nylon string. This is a very cheap mike but sounds very nice imho.

    Greetings, Rik
