Quad Capture Win 8.1 FAIL

Just an FYI....

The UA-55 QuadCapture driver is a FAIL on Win 8.1....

That really ticks me off...funny...everything else works....and I mean EVERYTHING...

Uninstalled, reinstalled, ran as Admin, blah blah blah....FAIL...

I hate when that happens...

I'm seriously considering dumping it, as much as I love it....their always late to the party...
while everyone else just cruises right along....

Let me clarify...every other device I own...

I know some have reported problems with their RME Interface drivers as well...

I wonder why it is that Audio Interface and Music Hardware in general is always
late with getting their drivers updated....

They have more then ample time to work with the Beta's, the Previews, and the
release candidates...long before release, and they don't...been that way as long
as I can remember...you'd think that after all this time they'd be on the bandwagon...

They chose to wait it out ...and wait it out...and wait it out...

It's working fine here on 8.0. Is this an 8.1 issue?  What are the symptoms?

IIRC Roland did not release a Win 8 driver until Win 8 was offically released. Maybe they have something in the pipeline.

    Intel i7 3770K @4.4GHz, 32GB RAM, 240GB SSD System disk, 2 x 2TB and 1 x 1TB (with SSD Cache) HDD. Windows 10,  Sonar Platinum. Roland Quad Capture.

What is the benefit of 8.1 other than the Start Button etc...?  I use 3rd part utilities to get the Start Button back and get rid of the annoying opening screen before the log in screen.

It sounds like you tried most everything to get this going. With 8.1 being such a major OS change, they hopefully will fix whatever is missing or changed so drivers created for any Win 8 version will work. That is a part I don't understand about this upgrade. It's still in the same version number while it probably should be labeled Win 9 instead.

The official release of Windows 8.1 is Oct 17th.
I know it's annoying... but these types of issues are fairly common with pre-releases.
That gives Roland/etc more than a month to get the issue/s sorted.

I got the Roland Duo-Capture driver to work in 8.1 by modifying the driver code.
Seems to work fine until Roland comes out with official 8.1 drivers.

Hmmm...I've got a Quad Capture but haven't turned it on in a few days.

Anticipating I could have trouble, anyone know if there's a procedure to "roll back" to Windows 8.0 if there's a problem?

Is 8.1 going to be "pushed" on us automatically eventually with the usual shut down/update procedure?  I assume it will.

This might be something to read also:  http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_other-windows_update/how-to-rollback-windows-updates/08c9c93f-990a-481f-8d21-dc2ede40869b

I think Jim Roseberry's thoughts above are comforting, though.  Roland will probably have things worked out by October 17th...

I'll be making a recent image of my whole rig before moving to 8.1.  I'll be doing a clean install with just Sonar and audio stuff.

Sometimes it's not worth having the latest, greatest OS release for DAW purposes. Hardware / software updates usually take awhile to catch up if revisions are required...some mfrs are dead slow with driver updates.

I like to stay one major OS release behind for DAW use. I stuck with XP well into the Win7 era. I've very recently switched to Win7X64,  now that Win8 is becoming established. The issue of incompatible drivers, etc. is all but removed from the equation. Who want's to deal with that annoyance? Not me, that's for sure.

I do exactly the same - my main machine is Windows 7 64 bit - I even have a couple of older machines still on XP and they STILL work perfectly

8.1 will be coming through the Windows App Store so it won't be pushed on you unless you comp is set to automatically install app updates.

On another note. Roland tech support has no idea when 8.1 drivers will be out.

Create a backup image file using True Image or similar (prior to installing 8.1).
That way you know you can get back to where you are today...
