I'd like to echo those sentiments.

I saw that it was 8.9... that's very powerful. News reports were saying anywhere from 14 foot to 30 foot wall of water hit Japan.

Not a very good situation for Japan. Tsunami warnings are up for the entire Pacific basin from Alaska to the tip of Chile.

    Prayers.....

Incredible, terrifying images on the news right now. Burning buildings swept along on a tidal wave..worse than anything Hollywood could dream up. My heart goes out to them.

In case you missed it.... Jerry died a few years ago.... but that probably won't stop Pat Robertson from commenting.

You gotta admit...8.9 is kinda like the wrath of God.... it don't much stronger then that very often... fortunately.

I saw a plate tectonics map of Japan..... they are directly over and very close to a large number of plates all moving in different directions. See the map here  so it amazing that they don't have this sort of thing happening all the time.

Lift your head out of the bathtub, Bapu.  That's it.  Your rubber ducky is on the edge of the tub, between the "No More Tears" shampoo and your Mooch action figure.  Glad I could help.

I'm sure there are others that will take up the torch, though.

The Tsunami hit Maui. Cheeseburger in Paradise in Lahaina got a wave of water up to the second floor. I'm still looking for news of the damage to Hawaii and Calif.. It's going to be a real bad mess if they don't get those reactors cooled down and under control. There could be aftershocks to come. It ain't over yet.

Crg, worst damage on west coast seems to be in Crescent City, with the harbor badly damaged.  Crescent City is particularly vulnerable... that city had severe damage after the 1964 Alaska quake.  They built a 20 ft. sea wall, and no water from this tsunami got beyond that wall.

On a cynical note, how long til Jerry Fallwell explains why this happened??

Yeh, he's dead but I gotta imagine he still has connections...Pat Robertson has a direct line, I think. He's the one who blamed Haitians for their earthquake, and everyone bordering the Indian Ocean for their tsunami. Then again, nothing bad has ever happened to Pat. I don't know if that's an argument in his favor or not, though.

On a more serious note, though, it is educational to compare the results of this mind-bogglingly huge event to the relatively small one that flattened Haiti. It's a good argument for building codes. Nobody is better prepared for this kind of disaster than the Japanese. They don't have to wait on FEMA, for one thing.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.
