Queen fan? You'll like this documentary
Queen: Days of Our Lives A fast-forward chronology of the band, told by the band. Lots of clips I've never seen before, but unfortunately no extended music segments. Still, an interesting inside look at superstardom, and how hard it is to achieve and sustain it.

Queen broke more ground than most people give them credit for. Although commercial success was always their primary motivation, they still avoided repetition and imitation. They weren't afraid to explore new directions. Even when they went Disco, they did it with class and originality. One of the subjects mentioned in the film was how effective Freddie was at engaging audiences and involving them in the show, which is difficult to pull off in a stadium. Watch the Rolling Stones film "Gimme Shelter" and see the terror on Jagger's face as he loses control of the audience. Freddie even gets away with chiding a huge crowd for booing a disco tune, saying "it's just a record, people". Another great story has Freddie putting Johnny Rotten in his place. So much for the stereotype of gay guys being wusses.

Well, Freddie wasn't a typical gay, he would sleep with just about anyone that he was interested in. Quite the partier! Of course, that's what did him in too...

Very cool. Too bad the audio isn't better. It was obviously taped direct from the board, so maybe a better version exists somewhere. But what a great live band. No in-ear monitors, no sequencers or prerecorded backing tracks, no auto-tune. Not even the obligatory three-girl backing vocal line. Just four guys singing in real time while not missing a beat. Any singing drummers out there can attest to how hard it is to do both of those things well at the same time but Mr. Taylor pulls it off.

Have you heard about this Queen tribute band, Queen Extravaganza? It was put together by Roger Taylor, who conducted an online search for talent. Not just one, but three Freddie soundalikes in the band, including a singing drummer. The lead singer just needs to grow a mustache and loosen up a bit and from a distance you'd think he was Freddie. Can't wait for them to come to Vegas. http://www.youtube.com/user/QueenExtravaganza http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w87_cizPnso

The recently released live album (better audio) is on YouTube with better audio quality. It sounds slow though. Queen Extravaganza ? Don't get me started about that... Dislike ! :) Nobody will replace Freddie and Deacon got out exactly the right time. The only one of them alive that maintained creditability. Still I admit I like May's solo efforts esp when he is campaigning against the badger cull (I know some musicians who play with him or support him in his efforts all lovely people).

I have the 'Queen with Paul Rodgers' live DVD. I know a lot of people hated the combination but I really enjoyed it, because he didn't try and mimic Freddie, just sang it his way. I thought a few of the songs suited his voice better than Freddie's (Hammer to Fall for example)The new stuff they wrote together was pants though.

Brian May is also a keen astronomer is he not? I seem to remember him on The Sky At Night with the late Patrick Moore. I think he's still married to Anita Dobson as well - a rare example of a long lasting celebrity marriage. I think it's because they both have such similar hair.
